About this deal

The 3M Chrome and Metal Polish is a refined formula that removes surface rust, stains, corrosion and oxidation with ease. It’s best suited to chrome or stainless steel but they do provide an alternative for magnesium or aluminum surfaces. Now, my personal favorite compound for cleaning and polishing bakelite (and other similar phenolics) is to use Cuticle Oil. With regards to using aluminum foil, it reacts with the chrome chemically, which allows for easy scraping of the surface. Aluminum is soft, which means it won’t damage the metal underneath. With plenty of reproductions on the market, it's wise to learn various methods to identify Bakelite rather than finding out afterward that you have made a costly mistake. There are many ways to test valuable Bakelitepieces, and several of them require using only your senses. Until you get very comfortable identifying Bakelite, however, it's good to employ more than one of these tests. Unfortunately, this polish may not remove rust from chrome as well as you’d hope. The container isn’t very secure and may leak. You may also find the polish to be a bit watery, which can make it hard to work with. Specs

And thanks to all of you who share your repair experiences and techniques here. I love to learn new tips and this place is a gold mine. In some cases, metal polishing can be used to restore a metal surface to its original condition. This is often the case with antique pieces or other items that have been damaged over time. Oxidation is a big worry when it comes to chrome because chrome has one enemy, which is rust. If oxidation occurs, so will rust spots and its important to try your best to avoid it. By placing a protective coating over the chrome, it helps to preserve the surface and increase its finish over time. Chrome Restoration Simichrome Polish is a paste polish that was invented in Germany by the Happich company in the 1960s which made metal parts for luxury automobiles like BMW, Volkswagen, and Mercedes. The wanted a fine polish for the chrome and other high polish metals for those amazing vintage automobiles.

5. 3M Chrome and Metal Polish

I decided to put them head to head on a piece of vintage hardware around my shop, an old door escutcheon, to see how they do and what the difference is. After this post you should have a good sense of which one you may want because they do yield different results even if they proclaim to do essentially the same thing. Simichrome Meguiar’s : This company makes a wide range of polishing products, including liquids, pastes, and powders. They also make a number of different waxes and sealants. Irregular maintenance of your car’s chrome may cause issues to its finish. Due to the softness of chrome, you can achieve excellent results by using a quality polish that’s designed for automotive applications.

No matter which method you choose, there are a few basic steps that should be followed when polishing metal. First , the surface should be cleaned with soap and water to remove any dirt or debris. Next , an abrasive compound should be applied to the metal using a cloth or brush. Once the compound has been applied, it should be worked into the metal using circular motions. Finally , the excess compound should be removed with a clean cloth. [1], [2], [3] What Can I Use Metal Polishers On? When polishing metal, it is important to remember that less is more. You should only apply enough polish to cover the surface of the metal and you should avoid applying too much pressure. If you apply too much pressure, you could end up scratching the metal. If you are not sure how much pressure to use, it is always best to start with less and then increase the amount of pressure if necessary. Chrome parts can be some of the best-looking components on your vehicle, and it’s also a strong and durable finish. Chrome plating on your wheels, grille, trim, and mirrors gives your vehicle a glow that can be seen from across the parking lot while being extremely resistant to weather, road grime, dirt, and everything else that batters your vehicle every single day. Although the finish is strong, without proper maintenance, it will start to look dull, pitted, faded, chalky, or even rusty. Fortunately, most of those issues are right on the surface and don’t get into the finish properly. Simichrome works well on chrome, silver, brass, gold, copper, pewter, aluminum, magnesium, stainless steel, and is even fine enough to work on Plexiglass. It is also important to choose a polish that is compatible with the type of finish that is on the metal .For example, some polishes are designed for use on brushed finishes, while others are better suited for polished finishes. [4], [5], [6], [7] When applied correctly, metal polishes can provide a number of benefits that can help to extend the lifespan of metal surfaces. By removing contaminants and protecting against future damage, polishes can help keep metal looking like new for longer. As a result, regular polishing can save you time and money in the long run. Non-abrasive compounds are another popular type of metal polish. These products typically contain softer chemicals that help to break down dirt, grime, and tarnish but don’t leave scratches. Non-abrasive compounds are safe for use on all types of metals , including soft metals like gold and silver. [7] Liquid polishes Liquid polishes are another popular type of metal polish. They are typically made from a combination of oils and solvents that help to remove dirt and grime. Liquid polishes can be used on a variety of different metals.

Unfortunately, claims of removing rust aren’t exactly accurate. This isn’t a miracle polish that will take any old rusted chrome and turn it to shiny and new. Even on chrome that it does restore, it will take a lot of effort and work on your part to buff and scrub the tarnish and rust away. Specs Another great benefit of metal polishing is that it can make cleaning easier. When metals are polished, they tend to repel dirt, dust, and other contaminants. This can make it much easier to keep metals clean over time. In addition to being functional, metal polishing can also be used to enhance the appearance of metals. A polished metal surface can have a shiny, mirror-like finish that is very visually appealing. This can be particularly helpful when trying to sell a piece of jewelry or other item made from polished metal. To clean chrome and leave it shinier than when it was found, CLR’s Metal Clear has bottled the perfect formula. It’s not only a must-have for the garage, but for the home, too. It can be used on chrome-based faucets, washing machine drums, extractor fan vents, and plenty more features. Aside from metals, the manufacturer states that it can glide across porcelain, too. Selecting a chrome polish needs a little consideration, otherwise, you may find that rust and corrosion aren’t diminished or certain car parts, antiques, faucets, or metal surfaces end up looking scratched or worse than they originally started. This is because there are different types, strengths, and chemicals used. Read more about the uses and types, below. Types of Chrome Polishes I've used "AutoSol Gold & Silver Polish" and "AutoSol Metal Polish" on many vintage metal objects for years with great success.
