About this deal

This needs to be balanced against the goal to “future proof” the network. The wiring is a project to install, and the labor costs, when done by professionals, usually exceed the materials cost. But it's tempting to spend a little more in the hope that the network will outlast the peripherals. For those that want to take this route, Cat6 or Cat6a are good options. Cat5 stands for Category 5 cable, while Cat5e stands for Category 5 Enhanced (or Enhanced Category 5). Cat5e specs offer a significant upgrade in terms of general performance and faster data transfer speeds than the earlier Cat5 versions. Ethernet connectors are used for Ethernet networking such as telecommunications or data equipment. The ethernet connectors are connected to each end of an Ethernet cable. Ethernet connections between devices provide a reliable, stable and interference free connection with fast data transfer speeds and are sometimes more preferred than wireless or Wi-Fi networks. Typical uses of Cat5 cable include numerous LAN (Local Area Network) applications, such as connecting multiple computers to form a network of linked devices in reasonable proximity Here, wire white/blue and blue/white are in pins 5 and 4. The wires green/white and white/green are in pins 1 and 2. The orange/white and white/orange wires are in Pins 3 and 6. At the same time, pins white/brown and brown/white are in pins 7 and 8.

There are two different pinout standards used worldwide, and depending on your location, you will determine which one you should use. An easy way to remember the two different RJ45 connector pinouts is T568A is used in America and Asia, and T568B is used in Britain(UK) and Europe. The different pinouts will still work if you mix them up. Both Cat7 and Cat8 cables are only available in shielded versions, and support transfer bandwidths and speeds far more than what most office users would typically need. However, many people do choose to install Cat6 and Cat6a Ethernet cables as they offer more headroom to optimise network speeds and device performance in the future. Solid conductor (solid-core) Cat5/Cat5e Ethernet cable tends to be used where longer runs need to be set up to achieve a more reliable and stable permanent wired network. This is more common in office buildings and other professional setups. Applications that involve running outdoor Cat5 cable, or passing it through sections of wall, will often benefit from the use of solid-core wiring. See patch cables for the details of making a crossover cable; if you make one, mark it so clearly that you'll never confuse it. Cat5 cable specifications dictate it should be able to handle data transfer over Ethernet networks at frequencies (also known as bandwidth, or data-carrying capacity) of up to 100 MHz. Cat5e offers superior performance and is rated for frequencies of up to 350 MHz. This is due in part to its stricter performance requirements for things like crosstalk (interference between individual wires), attenuation and return loss.

What is a RJ45 connector?

There is also a plan to increase the speeds of Cat5e to 5 Gbps over the existing cables, known as the IEEE P802.3bz standard, which also works on Cat6 cabling.

In modern domestic and commercial environments, RJ45 connectors are primarily used for plugging an internet-enabled device directly into hardware such as a modem, router, or server. The connectors themselves are the modular sets of fittings at either end of the physical data connection (Ethernet cable) joining one networked device to another. Remember that Pin 1 is on the left hand side of the RJ45 connector with the clip at the rear. Crossover Ethernet CableQ: Can I install Cat 5 cable over a distance longer than 90 meters and still certify the system as Cat5? Ethernet networks are very common in domestic and working environments. A network is simply several interconnected devices that are capable of sharing data between one another. Home networks are usually based around a router or modem, connected to various other devices such as PCs and laptops, smart TVs, mobile phones, games consoles, media servers and printers. A domestic setup of this kind is an example of a LAN (Local Area Network). The name comes from the fact that all devices linked to it are close to the others, typically within the same building. Types of RJ Connectors

U/UTP is, therefore, the most susceptible to interference, signal noise, return loss, and attenuation, although the cable will be considerably cheaper to buy. F/FTP will offer the greatest protection against performance-limiting factors like crosstalk, but it will also be the most expensive type to buy. We aim to provide clear and straightforward information about Cat5 and Cat5e cables. We will explain what these standards mean, give examples of their common uses, and talk about the various types, lengths, specifications, and prices. Many people are keen to know the difference between Cat5/Cat5e and Cat6 Ethernet cable and whether Cat6 cable is compatible with Cat5-based setups. Keep cables away from devices which can introduce noise into them. Here's a short list: copy machines, electric heaters, speakers, printers, TV sets, fluorescent lights, copiers, welding machines, microwave ovens, telephones, fans, electric ovens, dryers, washing machines, and shop equipment. Unlike phone wires, CAT5 wires do not cross over; the same wires go to the same pin numbers at all connectors. This works because hubs all have internal crossovers.Once you have established which wiring convention you need to use, complete your RJ45 wiring by following these basic steps:

Also, with virtually all consumer gear, such as routers, motherboards and Ethernet cards, max out at 1000 megabits or 1 Gbps. So for the time being, and likely years to come, the typical user will not be able to take advantage of the 10 Gbps and faster speeds of the Cat6a and higher cables.

Part I. What is a Cat5 Cable?

Now, insert these wires inside the RJ45 plug at its front to ensure that the cable is fully inserted, and the sheath is extending the plug for about ½," and this area will be put inside the crimp tool. But which cable is the best to use? Just like there is no best computer or best router for everyone, it comes down to a few variables. You should be aware that there are two types of electrical connection you can make when wiring an RJ45 plug to an Ethernet cable. The types that you make will depend on which wiring standard you use – T568A or T568B.
