While it can be played in one long sitting, you can also split the experience over two or three sessions due to a save system. Also, whenever the GM adds a sand token to the bottom of the hourglass, the Goonies can flip one of the red Teenager cards back face-up again. Goonies receive one item card no matter the outcome of the challenge, but draw a treasure card if they succeed.

It’s still enjoyable as a game but the nostalgia element might be lost on someone who didn’t grow up with it. Attacks are handled in the same way as Goonie skill checks, and the GM has their own tokens that can upgrade their rolls. It’s a system that I really enjoy and I really hope they continue to release more games in this series. There is no reason not to use the first penalty-free hint for any puzzle if you get even a tiny bit stuck.

Also, I liked that everything from both Never Say Die and Under the Goondocks all fit in the base game’s box, which is a rare treat.

The gameplay is set in turns where the Goonies go first and do their actions, the GM is next and plays any enemies or actions that they can, then the GM controls the active enemies and tries to take as much health from the Goonies as possible. It was fun because it told the story of the movie and added just enough complexity to make it interesting but not bogged down in rules.

While you are definitely going to get more out of it if you are a Goonies fan, that’s not required to enjoy this experience. The cards come in assorted sizes but do a really good job of using style, size, and color to help keep track of which card is which. The card quality is excellent and I really appreciate getting a dry erase map that is not only required for puzzle solving but also doubles as a place to make notes. Legendary Treasures cannot be discarded unless stated and do not count against the 2 Treasure limit.

It’s a story about kids pushing their limits, taking hold of their destinies, and trying to help their families. So does Never Say Die manage to raise the Jolly Roger and sail off into the sunset, or is it another booby-trapped dead end?I can honestly say that the most fun we have had sitting at a table playing games with our kids is while playing that first Coded Chronicles game. Player characters become stunned and then re-enter the game at full health the next turn (Goonies never say die), but it adds a sand token to the bottom half of the sand timer.

Along with the longer playtime, we also took advantage of the three act split to spread our game over three different sessions and I’m very glad we did. As you can read in those reviews, we had some mixed experiences with the previous Coded Chronicles games. Last Spring, when I discovered that Funko Games was releasing a Goonies themed tabletop rpg board game, I knew it was something we had to get our hands on because Goonies and also because Funko Games is racking up a great reputation for fandom based games that are awesome tributes to their respective franchises. When these are combined with the number for the Use skill, you end up with a four digit number which you can then use to lookup an entry and read it. If they agree they spend a wish token to lend the active Goonie a die as shown on their placard for the current check.The Adventure Guide is for the GM, It comes with a nice GM guide but also has sections for each adventure including map diagrams over a two-page spread which keeps things simple and unintimidating. This is the optimal scenario – a family playing an RPG-style game based around a movie that is a family favorite. If you do consider splitting your Goonies experience into only two nights, I suggest doing the first two acts at once and saving the third for another day. Bring back your best childhood memories and watch your kids fall in love with this classic adventure movie.
