The Hydrasynth is a powerhouse of sounds and has limitless possibilities. The workflow is very easy with no menu diving, just a fabulous synth. Wavemorphing is a feature usually found on synths with preset wavetables. But creating user wavetables on those products is arduous or downright impossible. As a debut synth from a new company, the Hydra is hugely impressive. This is not easy to achieve on the first throw! In terms of build quality, looks, features, sound – not to mention affordability – the Hydrasynth has it all. You can also generate waveforms with the Mutators in both FM and Sync modes so you don't have to use another oscillator (unless you want to!) What really grabbed people when the original Hydrasynth was first announced was the surprisingly flexible sound generation system combined with the plentiful real-time control that included polyphonic aftertouch (a relative rarity amongst synths even today). When people started to use and hear the synth, this interest turned to genuine excitement. All three oscillators can access any of the 219 available waveforms; these include the expected analogue modelled waves, plus families of more exotic fare, with names such as Cluster, Flux, Vokz, Klangor and Scorpio. The tonal qualities of each are rich, varied and best experienced by trying them out while watching the oscilloscope. I did initially wonder whether a couple of hundred waves would be enough, but since the Hydrasynth offers myriad ways to twist, squash, mash and trash them, it should be ages before you try every combination.When scrolling through the waveforms, it's easy to notice that a number of them have rather complex shapes. Upper harmonics manifest as higher frequency waveforms themselves, and depending on the distribution of partials may cluster together into dense, noisy timbres or appear as discrete, discernible tones. At the extremes, the highest harmonics add sparkle on top of the more tonal portions of the waveform, but by tuning down the fundamental frequency of the oscillators into sub-audio territories, what was once textural becomes the primary component of a sound. Of course, should the lower harmonics still be somewhat audible, lightly applying a highpass filter to your patch will clean up the low-end rumbles.
