About this deal

In 2006, John Connolly gifted us with THE BOOK OF LOST THINGS, a brilliant work of dark fantasy. It was quite a departure from his decades-long series featuring Charlie Parker, a thriller saga tinged with just the right amount of supernatural influence. It was the type of story that could appeal to both adults and children and called to mind the work of masters like C.S. Lewis and Lewis Carroll. In The Book of Lost Things, the main character is a boy, and in this novel, the main character is a woman. Discuss how the novel would be different if the genders were reversed in The Land of Lost Things. In the Wyldness, Wyldfyre is worried about Heatwave's injury, until Kai takes off to search for something before Wyldfyre goes after him. As the story develops, you learn that Calio is more than they seem, in appearance and in character. As their life concludes, what are your thoughts on the last dryad and their final act of saving Ceres, rather than taking her life?

Twice upon a time—for that is how some stories should continue—there was a mother whose daughter was stolen from her. Oh, she could still see the girl. She could touch her skin and brush her hair. She could watch the slow rise and fall of her chest, and if she placed her hand upon the child’s breast, she could feel the beating of her heart. But the child was silent, and her eyes remained closed. Tubes helped her to breathe, and tubes kept her fed, but for the mother it was as though the essence of the one she loved was elsewhere, and the figure in the bed was a shell, a mannequin, waiting for a disembodied soul to return and animate it. Each chapter title is a word written in an archaic language, such as Old English, Old Norse, and others, with the modern English translation underneath. What do you think is the reason for this? I have to admit that I was a bit worried while reading the first 25% or so. It was not very The-Book-of-Lost-Things-y at all, and I was scared that this one wouldn't be as magical as the original. And then the Woodman appeared and all my fears were put to rest. Kingdoms, cities and villages: Abandoned village · Algae farmers' village · Coastal village · Cragling Village · Crossroads · Farmers' village · Holy City of Domu · Hono Mizu · Ignacia · Jamanakai Village · Keepers' Village · Kingdom of Shintaro · Merlopia · Metalonia · Ninjago City · Nom · Oni land · Ouroboros · Serpentine village · Spinjago (non-canon) · Stiix · Valley of the Sphinx · Village in the valley · Village of Haru · Village of the Formlings Retreating to their base, Sora remarks some sculptures she dubs amazing, to which Cole explained Geo made them, satisfying her as she explained her parents never understood her interests, and continues doubting if her Technology is still Riyu's. Nya then wonders if the Merge created new Elemental Masters before spotting the Hoarder, but it cannot approach their base. Inside, they meet another member called Bonzle before Cole then explained all the Finders, including Geo, ran away from their homes, forgotten by their people, and cannot leave the Land of Lost Things ever. Hearing a noise, Cole guides the girls to the cause, a machine that is old Imperium tech, powered by, to the girls' surprise: the Dragon Core they'd been searching for, but Cole wouldn't let them have it, unless there is a new energy source.Ceres doesn’t realize that she is days away from entering a different reality, one her father would have recognized, populated by beings not primarily human. There she will experience her own tale all the while worrying about her daughter and remembering all she was taught by her father. The silent child does not respond and as her condition worsens the hospital that she was staying at suggests moving her to a facility called Lantern House, in the suburbs far from the city of London. They are better suited to care for her and have had some success with young patients in the same situation. At Lantern House, Phoebe’s primary care-giver is a giant of a man named Olivier. He promises to fight with Phoebe for as long as it takes to get her better. When Phoebe’s condition continues to disintegrate, Ceres is called in the middle of the night to get to Lantern House where they provide her with a small room to be near her daughter.

Q: After all these years since the publication of The Book of Lost Things, how did you feel about revisiting the character David, who is now an adult, in this fresh story line? So as time went on, I wrote two short stories: “The Rat King” and “The Hollow King,” which belonged to that universe, and both of which were adapted for radio broadcast by the BBC. I then gently revised The Book of Lost Things for its tenth anniversary in 2016, the only time I’ve ever done that with one of my novels. Before and during the COVID pandemic, I worked on a screenplay for a proposed film of the novel (which hasn’t yet come to pass), and finally began to accept how much I wanted to explore that world once more. This was the first step toward deciding how I might explore it. Strands of stories like Wuthering Heights, where spirits find their way into the real world, and fantasy and reality are hard to separate - these themes are also reflected in John Connolly's latest book The Land of Lost Things. It’s hardly surprising, then, that the Kate Bush song of the same name was the writer’s first musical choice when he sat down for a chat about the book with Brendan O’Connor. John chose five of his all-time favourite songs to play during the show, and he shared the personal stories tied to his choice of music. With the fantasy settings, vivid characters, and adventurous scenes, The Land of Lost Things would make a great film or television adaptation. What parts of the novel would you love to see in live action? Who would be in the cast? Do you think this would be better as a film or a television series? One of the best things about Connolly’s writing in these books is the way he talks about stories. I love reading his observations and thoughts on the concept of the story and about our own identity as characters in our own respective tales. Book lovers and fans of John Connolly will not be disappointed by this remarkable standalone novel’ INDEPENDENT I have to say this book felt like a warm and comforting hug. There's so many beats done perfectly. Ceres is a great character. I did have questions about why Connolly chose to de-age her. It just didn't add to the story and I thought it was weird. In 2006, Irish author John Connolly brought us a brilliant bit of dark fantasy entitled THE BOOK OF LOST THINGS. Connolly made the decision to set LOLT in our real-life universe where The Book of Lost Things was published as we read it before all those years ago. Only it was David who was the author, not Connolly. I thought this was really fun and really drove home the theme of how stories take shape in our lives outside of the books they live in. But to return to a subject that often comes up when The Book of Lost Things is discussed, and may well come up again with this novel: I’ve heard The Book of Lost Things described as a “young adult” book, but it really isn’t, and I didn’t think of it in those terms when I was writing it. Instead, it’s a book that adults and young adults can read in different ways. For adults, it may be a novel that touches on remembered pain: of childhood, adolescence, and parental loss. It’s pain that still resonates, but the locus of it lies in the past. For young adults, especially those who may be struggling with the illness or death of a parent, or the arrival of a new stepmother, stepfather, or half-sibling, the effect of the book will be much more immediate, because all this is happening to them right now. To me this book was akin to fertilizing my soul. It reflected the grief and tragedy that touches all of our lives at one point or another; yet it also reflected the hope that is intrinsic to many, but that others struggle to find. The will to carry on through dire circumstances. The knowledge that some people do care, in spite of the ugliness we all see on the news every day. And finally, it reflected my love of reading and language and it comforted me to know there are still others out there just like me.
