About this deal

Delia stood in the kitchen rubbing her fingers over the patchy wet stubble where she’d scratched herself with the scissors. How does Finlay’s relationship to her motherhood (and especially single-motherhood) play out throughout the novel? As funny as this book was, it also managed to be a clever mystery without ever feeling overwrought and also kept me guessing throughout, although the beauty of this book is the thrill of the ride.

Before long, Finlay has a body to bury, a new nanny/roommate/partner-in-crime named Vero, a possible hot bartender boyfriend, a possible hot police office boyfriend, but only if she can avoid being arrested for a murder she didn’t commit and avoid being killed for getting mixed up with the wrong people. The way she brings each scene to life had me fully immersed in Finlay’s world, eagerly awaiting the next twist and turn. Abandoning the wad of paper towels, I stormed from the kitchen and lowered my voice to a harsh whisper. This is a hilarious, fun read with a bounty of laugh-out-loud moments, all the while cheering Finlay on while watching as she digs herself deeper into mischief. Granted, I didn’t stop reading it, so it wasn’t absolutely terrible in my mind, but I can see how other people would enjoy. This has her visiting, in disguise, and in a stolen dress, The Lush, a bar and club that Harris will be at.

It was also the same tone he’d used last month when he told me his landscaping business had taken off because of Theresa’s real estate contacts and he was flush with cash, and oh, by the way, he’d talked to a lawyer about filing for joint custody. If I couldn’t earn a paycheck in the next three months, Guy would find a way to take my kids and give them to Theresa, too. Elle Cosimano has certainly solidified herself as a master of comedic crime fiction, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. She is overheard talking with someone at Panera about murder mysteries and all the different ways that you can get rid of a body, etc. This suspenseful romp made me laugh but also kept me on the edge of my seat with its many surprises.

She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.Finlay Donovan is killing it, is the FIRST in a new comedy-mystery series, about a Single Mom and struggling Suspense Novelist, whose Fiction MAY or MAY NOT BE, inspired by events in her own life. The same Guy who’d done too many keg stands and puked in the back seat of my car back in college was now the attorney who golfed with the judge on Saturdays and had cost me my weekends with my kids. If you are looking for a healthy dose of realism and grit, then you are going to be doomed to be disappointed, but if instead you are looking for fun, entertainment, bags of humour and laughs, then Finlay Donovan is your woman. She wears the same wig-scarf and glasses in her author photo, which appears in the books she’s written. Finlay is having a terrible day when her children’s nanny, Vero, doesn’t show up and she’s running late to a fancy brunch meeting with her agent.

You never want to be the asshole that leaves a message promising to kill someone for being late, only to find out they’ve already been murdered. Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation. I am not ashamed to admit that 98% (yes I did the math) of what I read is romance, so I can safely say this is not my usual read. Finlay catches the attention of two very different potential romantic partners: Detective Nick Anthony and bartender/law student Julian Baker. Yet we’re supposed to believe that this mom (Finlay, the heroine in this book) grabbed the duct tape and wrapped it around her daughter’s head in an effort to… what?

We’re introduced a fresh, lovely character: A struggling, broke, drowning in debt, single mom, suspense novelist Finlay Donovan.
