About this deal

She feels she has failed as an adult, only having had sex once, and feeling as if no one could ever truly love her.

Intriguing, moving, and funny, the character-driven stories conjure up a richly imagined world in which Brodie attempts to bring resolution to the victims of unexplained mysteries and comfort to the survivors of personal tragedies. In the end it was that: the prospect of someone else, some other lucky bastard, trudging the streets in Jackson's battered shoes that did it. This time the absent youth is the niece of a woman he met in a bar, who secured his services through an unorthodox method. And in his reminiscing Jackson also wonders about Louise Murdo, now a DCI in Scotland, married with a child.

The book has sold well, and has some excellent reviews - so I guess it's me that is in the minority. With Reggie’s help, he finds Joanna again in the Penicuik farmhouse and destroys the evidence of the men she killed. A three-part television adaptation of Atkinson's first three books in the Brodie series was produced for the BBC under the blanket title Case Histories (2011).

Marooned overnight by a snowstorm is a cast of characters and a setting that even Agatha Christie might recognize – a vicar, an Army major, a Dowager, a sleuth and his sidekick – except that the sleuth is Jackson Brodie, and the ‘sidekick’ is DC Reggie Chase. He gets her a summer job at his office, but a mad man appears and kills Laura for no apparent reason. The book is based on a terrific set of three main characters and their three lives and stories which of course we know will turn out to be related. Described by her sister as a 'control freak', Caroline has a very detached view of everyone else in her life, and is seemingly unable to feel love for anyone except the baby she's carrying at the end. He's unable to resist coming to the rescue and increasingly he becomes a magnet for the bereaved, the lost and the dysfunctional. Jackson Brodie, ex-army, ex-police, ex-private detective, is also an innocent bystander – until he becomes a murder suspect. Brodie has several questions to ponder: Why would a road rage attacker want to kill him and another bystander, a crime novelist, who witnessed the incident? They are all notable for various reasons: Mr Wyre’s devotion to his dead daughter mirrors the powerful bond and fear Jackson feels over his own daughter, Marlee, who at eight is pert and has a habit of blurting things out at the wrong time.
