About this deal

You'd imagine a big financial crash would have taught capitalism a thing or two but well, you'd be wrong. As always, I would be taking a nearly impenetrable file home with me, and the evening would not be my own. It’s the passages where we see McCrum sitting in his car scared, or lifting his daughter with glee as he tells her that the bad guys are going to jail, which are the most poignant — I only wished there were more of them.

I would become someone so different from the person who entered the legal profession with such high ideals that, eventually, I would hardly recognize myself. In all likelihood the surveillance of McCrum and his boss by hacking groups and private investigators is the largest private surveillance operation ever. He draws aside the velvet curtin and offers glimpses into the avaricious world of panelled boardrooms.

As their only son, there was only one choice to be made now – and not just because of the outer circumstances these files presented, but because of early influences that had shaped my thinking and beliefs.

You'd also think that the journalistic world would come together in the face of an attack on one of theirs, and not throw the victims to the wolves to be eaten.McCrum’s pursuit and the whistleblowers’ courage is made all the more admirable due to the adversity they faced.

McCrum was more responsible than anyone else for the exposure and eventual collapse of the hugely fraudulent payment company. And when McCrum started to peal back the layers, it involved porn and gambling rings across Europe, Russian spies and a smear campaign against anyone that spoke ill of Wirecard. His parents are willing to give him an allowance, but that would mean doing all sorts of boring chores. In 15 years at the Financial Times he has covered business and finance from New York and London, helping to uncover fraudulent accounting at several listed companies. As described by McCrum, from the beginning of the investigation, there were many red flags around Wirecard – the company was a strange hybrid of a technology company and a bank with questionable financial statements, opaque origins, a trail of unusual acquisitions and a series of accounting anomalies. Violent crimes fill books and streaming services with tales of psychopaths that cause stories that can barely be believed.
