About this deal

Recognizing that their ideal product should excel at its purpose then go hide out in your garage as soon as the weather shifts is fundamental in the Win Wing design: it’s remarkably stable while riding, very light, protects riders from the embarrassing spray streak, and is a cinch to take on and off the bike.

It was a big leap from the original Ass-Savers that simply clipped onto your saddle. But oh, how much more effective these new fenders are! So, what’s actually new? And who would have suspected that this road & gravel fender is perfect for protecting your dropper seatpost? This might be my favorite surprise in mounting the Win Wing. The more dropper posts expand beyond mountain bikes, the more riders will have to deal with maintaining droppers. The straps seem amply strong though, so it’s probably safe to pull it one hole (or even two) tighter than you initially thought was enough. I go until the hole is visibly elongated when hooked. It’s so simple that it makes you wonder why it didn’t already exist. And, at the same time, its clever and minimal design leads you to admire the thought process and engineering that went into it." The Win Wing Road fits practically any skinny tire bike, protecting the rider in even the worst conditions. Ideal for winter training or if you want to add some comfort to your puristic urban ride. The Win Wing won't rattle or jam, and with only 64g, you won't even notice it's there.

Installation

Just as important as a tight fit is the angle of the blade. There are three different settings to compensate for the angle of your seat stays. Choose the one that allow a horizontal or a tail-up position. Avoid a tail-down angle as this will reduce the efficiency of the fender. if you plan on pedaling your gravel bike or ATB in wet and muddy conditions, the Win Wing is a no-brainer." The straps are made from ultra-tough TPU and should be pulled as tight as you can comfortably do by hand. If you experience that the mudguard is not stable, try to use the next hole in the strap.

Stopping mud and spray before it hits your dropper post’s slider and main seal is sure to keep the post running smoother, longer. In person, the Win Wing’s patent-pending Wishbone is quite impressive. It’s very well-engineered and seems equally well-made. It consists of three pieces: a fiberglass-reinforced polyamid Nylon arch and two TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) straps. The straps each have a T-shaped base that fits within the molded foot part of the Wishbone. These provide a nice grippy and non-abrasive connection to the seat stays. The straps wrap around the seat stays, thread through a slot at the inside of each wishbone leg, and then connect to a molded tooth on the outside. There’s also an additional slot on the drive-side leg for an “anti-theft” zip tie. I’m not really a mudguard kind of a guy, honestly. I haven’t installed or used fenders in around 10 years and typically just opt to get dirty, even though we live in a very wet and muddy part of the world. However, when the Swedish brand Ass Savers got in touch and asked if we were interested in collaborating on the launch of the new Win Wing, I tossed preconceptions and vanity to the wind.

The fender blade is made from 80% recycled polypropylene and has five holes that are used to connect it to the Wishbone. There are three in the front-center of the blade that are used to insert the peg at the top of the arc. Each of these options changes the angle of the wing and enables bikes of varying sizes to achieve the correct angle. Ass Savers recommends a horizontal to “tail-up” position to maximize performance. I mounted it using the middle hole, which tilted the blade slightly upward on a size large drop-bar 29er. There are two additional holes that match with the two outer Wishbone pegs—one on each “wing.” Once they’re all attached, it’s remarkably solid, given its scant 71 gram weight. Not by coincidence, the Ass Savers Win Wing was released just as the cold and wet conditions of fall and winter set in. Perfect timing, right? Smart, because it was something I didn’t think I needed until I actually did. And that kind of sums up the Win Wing. It’s a solution that slaps you in the face, in a manner os speaking. It’s so simple that it makes you wonder why it didn’t already exist. And, at the same time, its clever and minimal design leads you admire the thought process and engineering that went into it.

This is not really a fender for everyone. Some don’t like the look of this gray recycled plastic loop hanging over your rear wheel. Some really need the total protection of proper full-coverage fenders. And some – like our own Editor-in-Chief – would rather have a wet butt than nasty muddy water bottles. And those are all valid concerns. We have made the Win Wing as kind to your bike as possible with soft rubber feet that gently hugs your frame. However, anything that is strapped to your bike for a longer period of time will leave marks. If you are very keen on maintaining that new bike look, please remember to install protective tape where your Win Wing is attached. Some of the water, mud, and general road spray off the tire will of course still stay attached and make its way onto your bike and legs… but all of the tangential lines connecting from your wet rear tire to your butt get stopped by the Win Wing.During the R&D phase, Ass Savers found that water does not spin off the wheel through the full radial cycle but rather comes off at a tangent that, of course, is aimed right at the saddle. As a result, it’s only the rear half of a full fender that guards against moisture and dirt. With this in mind, the Win Wing is intended to be mounted very close to the tire and angled up (there are three center holes on each blade to aid in achieving this angle). The Wishbone mount comes in two sizes, a Gravel size and a Road size, with each model corresponding to category Blade widths. For the Tangential Coverage to work properly, the mudguard needs to be installed very close to the wheel. Aim for 5-10 mm tire clearance for maximum coverage. Plus, while many conventional fenders rattle over rough surfaces or any off-road, the Win Wing stays quiet and doesn’t shake loose no matter where you ride it. Even though it seems to sit perilously close to the rear tire, we haven’t had any issue with it jamming even on especially muddy rides.
