About this deal

One place where travellers have had an undeniable influence for centuries is Bradbury End, an archetypal country town where the outwardly pleasant façade masks simmering discontent. This time it is not the travellers are the focus of vitriol and Jericho experiences some unwelcome profiling by local police. The citizens are up in arms about the proposed closure of the local library and the construction of a mosque, and Hussey clearly portrays the slow-dawning realisation that their prejudices have allowed far-right groups to infiltrate the town.

Scott Jericho is one of the most multi-faceted characters I have come across in recent years. He's a traveller, an ex-thug for hire, an ex-police officer, gay and capable of explosive violence. When we first meet him, he is also a recovering drug addict. A lot for one man to deal with, you might say. But wait, there's more. He is also haunted by the ghosts of three badly burned children, one of whom talks to him. It's a lot of balls to keep in the air for one character, so how does William Hussey do? The twist/ending I did not see coming and it did not spoil my enjoyment with it coming out of nowhere (although now finished, hindsight is a marvellous thing 😆). Spoiler: Dramatic licence was indeed well used by the author to allow Scott Jericho to survive his final run in with Kerrigan ahead of the conclusion with the killer. I know little about the traveller community so I loved this about the story and the main protagonist's life, this felt so unique to read in this genre and it was all the better for it. Also, I am here for all books with great LGBTQ+ rep! Killebrew, Ann E. (2005). Biblical Peoples and Ethnicity: An Archaeological Study of Egyptians, Canaanites, and Early Israel, 1300–1100 B.C.E. Society of Biblical Literature. ISBN 978-1589830974.In the novel without going into too much detail a modern day serial killer is recreating a nineteenth century disaster called Traveller’s Bridge. A bridge collapsed with a traveller’s caravan on it and five members of a freakshow were killed. Again this is based on a real life in 1853. The collapse of Hartley Bridge where a number of travellers were killed. Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered ( G) Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns ( H) in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. ( I) 5 When you hear them sound a long blast ( J) on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; ( K) then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.” Following God's law, the Israelites killed every man and woman of every age, as well as the oxen, sheep, and donkeys. Only Rahab, her parents, brothers and all "those who belonged to her" were spared. They were incorporated into Israel. Joshua then cursed anybody who rebuilt the foundations and gates, with the deaths of their firstborn and youngest child respectively. This was eventually fulfilled by Hiel the Bethelite under King Ahab's reign.

Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown ( C) to the ground ( D) in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord [ a] have for his servant?” Then they burned the whole city ( AI) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron ( AJ) into the treasury of the Lord’s house. ( AK) 25 But Joshua spared ( AL) Rahab the prostitute, ( AM) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho ( AN)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day. The Israelites’ circling of the city seven nights in a row and their parading of the sacred Ark of the Covenant may have had the effect of ‘spinning a supernatural net about the city’, undermining the inhabitants’ confidence that they could withstand a divinely powerful army.I love William Hussey’s writing! It’s fascinating and captivating, and unputdownable. William writes 'showing' like no other, whether it’s a YA contemporary or an adult thriller. Whereas his YA novels are written bluntly but on the softer side, this thriller is rougher and darker and sometimes more graphic. It seems to be happening again...A murderer leaving no evidence...But bodies in positions that remind of those killed...Jericho feels himself waking up...Coming alive again to investigate just What is going on...But it is dangerous, and puts people from his past and present in serious jeopardy... A beautifully wrought and fantastically gothic thriller that introduces a brilliant new detective quite unlike any I've met before. It left me hungry for more!" - S J Watson
