About this deal

On the way there, Mildred finds her friends Maud Spellbody and Enid Nightshade. When Mildred tells them about Ethel being nice for a change, Enid suggests she may have taken a "niceness course" during the holidays. Maud and Enid become suspicious when they catch Mildred talking to someone or something in her cat basket. I'm overcome with emotion and I will continue to read the rest of The Worst Witch series as there are some in the series I haven't read yet and I'm very excited to get going. D: Got it. Under the bus for Rowling. - Hey, one last thing. My favorite part was when the cat got turned into a monkey. Just thought you should know that. Seriously, all the old dude in the book says at one point is "Let us all begin the chanting." There's no song. I repeat, THERE'S NO SONG!... Don't tell me you don't know the song! RUBES! Here: The greatest musical number in the history of ever. Sadly, the awesomeness that makes the movie was missing in the book. Don't get me wrong, the book was fine, but there's no terror tag; no Donna with a broom phone; no Aggie and Delilah getting bumped into the lintel at the beginning complete with a penny whistle sound effect (in fact, there's no Delilah at all, technically); no hysterics from the laughing potion; no "Good morning Miss Hardbroom, LOVELY morning" from Charlotte Rae; no ketchup scene (which is admittedly really stupid... just like everything else in the movie, but it's awesomely stupid, I tell ya!) And most importantly, the Grand Wizard is an old man, and not the dreamboat played by Tim Curry that sets all the girls' quims a-quiver in the film.

While the characters are animals the situations are entirely human and her stories are full of understanding and sympathy for parents as well as children. Neither judgmental not soppy they reflect reality as they revolve around easily recognisable situations. Father Bear’s search to find a quiet place to sleep in Peace at Last and Mrs Large’s need to find time for herself in Five Minutes’ Peace (1986) are both wonderfully sympathetic to some of the familiar and rather tougher parental situations. As the years past and shit happened I forgot about The Worst Witch and the copy I had got lost, then looking through some books on here I came across it again and my heart leapt, so I bought it and prayed that it would arrive before my 25th so I could actually read it on my birthday. I began at midnight and finished around 1.00am. Jill Murphy was born in London in 1949. From a very early age she was drawing and writing stories, and was already putting books together (literally, with a stapler) by the time she was six. She went on to study at Chelsea, Croydon and Camberwell Schools of Art. Jill worked in a children's home for four years and as a nanny for a year, before becoming a freelance writer and illustrator. For this special edition, Jill Murphy has reproduced her original illustrations entirely in gorgeous full colour, and has written a special letter to her readers.

I've seen half of the first season on Netflix and I could not handle how adorable and wonderful this show was to watch. I hadn't realized I needed a sweet, girl-power, witchy academy in my life. I wish the books were longer and the writing wasn't as choppy but I loved it. Major kudos to the casting director of the Netflix shows because the characters look exactly like illustrations in the book. Way to go. In the next chapter, Mildred and Maud inadvertently make an invisibility potion instead of a laughing potion in their class test. I'm bringing in El to ask her if I should add anything. Once again, it's super-fun that she's reading to me now, as much as I've read (and am reading) to her. The author Jill Murphy began writing The Worst Witch at the age of 15, while still at school, and based many points of the stories on her own school experiences at Ursuline Convent in Wimbledon, England, with Singing becoming Chanting, Chemistry becoming Potions and so on. [5] Recalling how the story was initially inspired by her own school experiences, [6] she said in an interview: "My two friends and I used to come home in our dark uniforms, looking very scruffy at the end of the day – my dark plaits sprouting tufts, with lost hair ribbons. My Mum used to say 'Look at you all. You look like the three witches!' and it gave me the idea for a witch's school – so that it was exactly like my school, but with a subtle touch of magic. All the characters are based on my school friends (and enemies) and teachers." She has been described as "one of the most engaging writers and illustrators for children in the land."

Also, there are SO many tv spinoffs of this, I'm surprised I had never heard of a single one before! In words and pictures, Jill’s stories have an easy and natural appeal to children. She liked children and all the warmth and mess of family life. Her stories about the Bear family and the family of elephants with the unsubtle surname Large, which they wear with pride, reflect that. When asked where her stories came from, she always said that she did not need to search for stories: everything she wrote about came from within her. That was truest in The Worst Witch, which she wrote while still at school and finished while still in her teens. Wild, Stephi (3 April 2019). Seems to be a trend with me. Mildred is aided by her best friend Maud Moonshine who is far more down to Earth than her friends, although often finds herself caught up in their antics. Another one of Mildred's friends is Enid Nightshade, a prankster who is even more adept at getting into trouble than Mildred is.

The story is funny and sweet. It’s about a witch in her first year of boarding school for witches. The plot is predictable but I had no problem with that. Mildred is a clumsy student who seems to be in constant trouble, but of course there’s a very happy ending. Each book covers one term at the school. There are two terms each year: the Winter term, from September to January, and the Summer term, from March to July. In First Prize for the Worst Witch, the most recent book, Mildred is in the Summer term of her fourth year. Mildred is an outcast from the start. She is presumably a Muggle born, having earned a scholarship through a creative writing essay rather than going there because of her heritage. As such, she did not have the magic centered upbringing her peers had. Though she makes up for this through her creativity and tenacity. When it was no longer realistic that Mildred would still be at school, the series relocated her to a magical university in Cambridge and was retitled Weirdsister College: The Further Adventures of the Worst Witch and saw the return of Felicity Jones as a reinvented Ethel Hallow.
