About this deal

So when Manizheh takes control of him, I know I’m supposed to feel bad for him and I also did to a small degree.

In all fairness, Chakraborty’s characters seem to feel the same way, but I think this is worth pointing out.

Another piece of this is Chakraborty’s fondnesss for libraries, which meshes well with the urge to learn. But the death of his people and loss of his beloved Nahri have unleashed the worst demons of Dara's dark past. This is the romance Nahri always deserved, with a man who loves and respects her, who is her friend not just her lover, and who can treat her like an equal. Though having Suleiman’s seal is a good thing for them because that means Manizheh doesn’t have it, Ali cannot access its power.

I also really enjoyed Nahri and Hatset’s interactions in this book, they have a very interesting dynamic. It takes a long time for the real action to start and it feels like much of the beginning of the book, up till Ali and Nahri get to Ta Ntry is largely treading water. I had some computer troubles which are (thankfully) now resolved, and I’m ready to get back to reviews. She was fierce as hell in the book, took so many risks and chances and laid everything out before her. How can they ever hope to defeat someone with Manizheh’s powers, and what is the strange ring doing to Ali?Chakraborty makes this series intricate and detailed which is something t Choi Min-jae is as ruthless, cunning, and unscrupulous as Tae-joo, lobbying, bribing and arranging backdoor deals with the political elite.

On top of all that, we get some big revelations about who she is She is, definitely, a Nahid, but the revelation of the circumstances of her conception is a relief to Nahri and readers alike. I really enjoyed their story line, both in terms of actiony bits, new revelations about both their pasts, and in terms of their evolving feelings. It’s a VERY LONG book at almost 29 hours for the audio, and could probably have been trimmed a little without losing the essence of the story. Ali has always been my favourite – and I was a little conflicted about him in this final book because it felt as though he lost a bit of himself when the conflict that had formed so much of his arc – with his family, his faith – being eased if not resolved.I’ve seen a decent amount of buzz for it online, but in my opinion these books should be making greater waves. this book caught my attention thanks to its marvelous cover, I am glad I read this review because now I know that there are two books that I should read before getting to The Empire of Gold. Back in Daevabad, Dara is questioning himself about the actions that he has taken and starts to struggle with conscience about his past and what he could have done differently. Dara isn’t innocent, but what he goes through is cruel, and you can tell that his viewpoints change, but nothing can be done. These three characters — Nahri, Alizayd, and Dara — all have compelling motivations and personalities.

This setting invited an examination of Nahri’s personal evolution since book one, the ways in which her newfound powers and her found-family have both changed her and helped strengthened her existing identity.

I really liked the ending for how much we got to see of things resettling, after the climactic battle. On top of all that, I really didn’t care for how much they hid from the reader about how they were going to defeat Manizheh. I was just so excited to finally be reading it and be back in this world 🥰 And yes, confused-Ali was the best 😄 (I didn’t think the marid storyline was the most interesting thing ever, either, so I loved getting the family drama back! We’ve seen what he is capable, both past and present, and how book two ended – but I felt as though we really ‘saw’ it in this book as Dara was forced to face the consequences of his decisions and beliefs both in the here and now, with the invasion of the city, and in the past.
