Artists and musicians (uncomfortably) can sense a large DSLR being pulled out instantly. This thing feels far less invasive and my propensity for zone-focusing and manually dialing in the exposure in advance means I can be extremely fast. If Portra helps more people to enjoy film and keep buying it, Kodak will make more money and will be able to keep producing all their films for all of us. And that’s kind of where I’m going with this. But compare it to Kodak’s professional offerings and Gold 200 begins to lag behind. Its slightly more saturated color palette places it firmly in the consumer film category, and will take a little bit of post-processing to get looking absolutely perfect. The film’s latitude also isn’t as wide as Kodak’s other offerings, limiting its usage to daylight shooting. For those keeping up with my move (from Utah to Arizona) and adventure: I’m on the road again. The long story is that we found a home in Arizona, but the moving company can’t deliver our stuff for a couple of weeks. The short story is that we’re off on a new adventure! Among some other stops, we’re enroute to the central California Coast—one of the most beautiful places in the world, in my opinion—while we wait for our furniture and such.All that said though, does it really matter? It’s a point worth mentioning because it’s a real phenomenon and I couldn’t write this review without bringing it up. It’s not something worth preaching about though. You can shoot what you want. Lighting Conditions: If you will be shooting in low light conditions, you should choose Kodak Ultramax as it has an ISO speed of 400. If you will be shooting in well-lit situations, Kodak Gold with its ISO speed of 200 is a good choice.

Whether it’s a price worth paying is up to you. If you haven’t shot it before, I’d recommend you try it at least once. I could see myself using multiple rolls for a project too, to take advantage of its quality. The 400 speed is the most versatile of the family (there is also a Portra 160 and a Portra 800) and it can be pushed/pulled while still delivering gorgeous results. If I wanted to give one of my point ‘n’ shoot cameras to a friend who doesn’t shoot film to try and see how they liked it, Portra would also be a likely choice. I think it’d give them results that’d make them want to shoot more film. Alongside these was a Portra VC, which stood for vivid colour and also came in ISO 160 and 400 versions. For the most part, Ultramax produces smooth and organic images with very fine grain. But remember that this is a 400 speed film; we should expect that it’s not going to be as smooth as Provia or Ektar. And while when exposed properly the film’s grain is never overbearing, in certain instances it can become especially pronounced. This happens most readily when the film is under-exposed, so make sure to meter correctly or err on the side of (very slight) over-exposure. As the old NC and VC versions were consolidated in 2010 due to the increase in digital processing going on, improving the scanning performance for the new version as Kodak did was a natural step forward too. You can do a lot in Adobe Photoshop with the Colour Balance adjustment layer if you aren’t happy with the results from the scanner. Still, fixing UltraMax’ blue hour colour casts isn’t straightforward. The shadows will need to be shifted toward yellows, whereas the highlights will need to be shifted toward the blues.This last summer my family and I embarked on an epic roadtrip that took us through Oklahoma. The plastic lens on the Ektar H35 is not going to produce the same level of quality as a 50mm f/1.8, and if you go in with too expectant a mindset, you’ll probably be disappointed when the scans come out. Image sharpness is pretty rough, especially at distance – the lens seems to do best at around 1.5-2m from the subject. In some ways, Portra 800 is a bit redundant considering Portra 400’s exposure latitude covers nearly all of Portra 800’s effective range. But Portra 800 is another spectacular option when light gets really low, and I find Portra 800 shines particularly when used for this intended application.Kodak Portra 400 35mm has an ISO of 400. This means that it is known as a mid-speed film, and will be able to take photos in most common lighting situations. Ultramax 400 is Kodak’s do-it-all consumer-grade film. It’s a general-purpose, daylight-balanced, color negative film with a sensitivity of ISO 400 (27º). It offers fine grain, deep saturation, and wide exposure latitude, and all of these traits make it well-suited to enlarging, and for digitization through scanning. It’s developed in standard C-41 chemistry, meaning it can be developed anywhere that film is processed. It’s also inexpensive and ubiquitous. Consumer film is affordable and versatile. It’s made to work well in nearly any shooting situation and light. For those who are new to shooting film or those who are on a budget, these are the best choice. So let’s talk about Kodak’s consumer-level film types first. Kodak Pro Image 100 Beauty certainly is in the eyes of the beholder, and from where we’re standing (with hundreds and hundreds of rolls shot over the years), Kodak Ultramax 400 can definitely create some absolutely beautiful images.
