About this deal

While I felt that there was a definite shift in the feel of this book compared to the previous seven (which seems fitting since this book’s cover is black while the others are all cream), I still enjoyed False Value immensely. I understand there were a lot of references to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but I was able to enjoy the book perfectly without having read that book.

But, for the sake of the question I would have to say Rush, their 1974 eponymous first album because it lacks the songwriting of Neil Peart. Aaronovitch has written a diverse cast of characters who all feel like real people with their own specific motivations. Starting to feel like there have been too many Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy references in this review already? Well buckle up hoopy froods, because more than any other book in the series so far, False Value is an ode to Douglas Adams (with Terry Pratchett's hat on). Tyrel and Stacy Johnson are another nice normal addition to Peter's list of acquaintances who could possibly become friends later on in the series.Didn't think I would enjoy reading about their relationship through a domestic lens, and the "pregnancy in the epilogue" reveal from the last book made me audibly ugh. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. Drawn into the orbit of Old Street's famous 'silicon roundabout', Peter thinks it should be a doddle compared to his last job. And I guess another thing I love about this series – along with the stunning number of culture references Aaronovitch can pack into his books, there’s also the inside jokes and digs that you’ll only get if you’ve been with these characters from the start. A former Waterstones’ bookseller, Ben Aaronovitch cut his teeth writing for television including Doctor Who before turning to the inspiration of crime fiction to fashion Rivers of London.

Aaronovitch has a very witty, casual voice, with a tendency toward sarcasm and humor, which is threaded throughout Broken Homes. It’s just like old times again, but this time, Peter isn’t a bumbling rookie and Nightingale is beginning to treat him more like a colleague and less like a student, possibly easing him into the role as head of the Folly one of these days. I just mentally checked out at the 50 percent mark to just finish this book to have it count towards a book bingo I am doing. I get it: it’s the eighth book in a series, but I’m seriously getting the feel that it’s getting out of Aaronovitch’s hands. I think the foxes are originally from The Furthest Station and Maksim from one of the series comics but yes, they have both appeared in more recent books since then.

He can work on whatever he wants from now on and I won’t make snide comments as long as he keeps on producing this level of quality. Her erotic short story, “Kiss of Life,” appears in the Berkley anthology AGONY/ECSTASY under the pen name Lily Daniels.Maybe Aaronovitch having Peter deal with "The Faceless Man" in the last book meant we would get filler, but geez this is boring.

I will be first to say I love Hitchhiker’s in many forms (excepting the movie, really), but even I found this overkill. I love that whole conversation and how domestic their relationship has become—like they have both matured a bit through knowing each other. Are we meant to believe that Peter and the rest of the London police force would just forget about Lesley and move on? There were mass graves of prisoners all over Germany and occupied Europe, and once you were shot in the head and dumped in a pit nobody could tell a wizard from anybody else.My mistake was reading it too quickly the first time, so I had to read it again slower the second time and was able to savor all the finer points that made this book such a great addition to the series as a whole. Peter and Guleed's chats about meeting her fiance's family in Hong Kong and how they reacted to her having melanin and him converting religions are sadly true to life: ‘They’re not thrilled,’ said Guleed suddenly. Cut off from the badge and uniform that usually prop up his investigations, and while surrounded by the kind of tech that his magic usually fries, he must rely on old-fashioned detective work to help him catch the 'rat' hiding amongst the Mice. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. My favorite part of this one, though, was a little more development of Foxglove and a lot more of Beverley.
