You can obviously only find these lenses used these days and with the rise of mirrorless cameras and the option to adapt these lenses many of them are overpriced and overhyped now and the condition they come in after 40 years is not always great.
For comparison’s sake I included the Voigtlander 50mm 1.2 here. I consider this performance average for a lens with these parameters. You can clearly see some onion ring structures caused by the use of aspherical elements though.One advantage of using L mount cameras + TTArtisan 50mm f0.95 lens is you can use the 7Artisans close focus Leica M-L adapter. This lets you get in closer than the standard 0.7m minimum focus distance (perhaps to 0.3m). This adapter is also fantastic when used with vintage rangefinder lenses that are limited to 1m close focus distance. TTArtisan 50mm f0.95 + Leica SL + 7Artisans M-L close focus adapter Landscape photographers should still probably favor the Samyang 50mm f1.2 or the Fujinon 56mm f1.2 for improved sharpness across the frame, with significantly less distortion. Shot wide open this lens has some of the best looking bokeh I’ve seen in a long time. Taking the price into consideration this shouldn’t even be possible. It’s really that good.
The Zeiss Loxia 50mm 2.0 was the first manual focus 50mm lens for E-mount cameras. In some areas it shows a better performance, but I find it a bit overpriced these days. If you want to spend that much money on a manual focus 50mm f/2.0 lens better have a look at the Voigtländer 50mm 2.0 Apo-Lanthar E.
Conclusion
It looks like true infinity would have been slightly behind the lens’ hard stop when used on my Leica M10. Due to mount tolerances on lens and camera this can always happen and is the reason most lenses can be focused past the infinity mark. portrait distance 2.0m distance (24mp Sony A7III vs 24mp Leica M10) The beauty of designing the lens as Leica M mount is you can adapt it to pretty much any digital camera. On the Leica SL I use a Leica M-L adapter and I use the same adapter with my Lumix S5 mirrorless camera. That said, if people ask me what adapter to buy today I normally recommend the Novaflex M-L adapter as it’s cheaper and still works well. Get closer for dreamy detail shots All samples have been shot on my Fujifilm X-pro3 cameras. I have shot this lens at night as well as in daylight, I have tried to shoot both portraiture and more street oriented images. All images have been post processed using Adobe Lightroom software. The lines running through the circles are due to the glass I used as a mirror to take these pictures and are not a feature of the lens. color cast It’s metal construction, which a lot of people get excited about, no mention of the type of metal used.
Lately there have been two rising stars on the Chinese lens manufacturing scene. One is 7artisans and the other is TTartisan. While their name is VERY similar, they”re NOT the same company as far as I’ve been told. They both get their optics done by DJ OPTICAL, but they each do their own lens designs. There are many nice 50mm lenses out there, with which one could compare this lens to, but they would mostly be full frame lenses for other systems that would have to be adapted, for example Leica 50mm f/1.4 Summilux, Voigtländer Nokton 50/1.5, 50/1.2 or 50/1.1. TTartisan even has their own 50mm f/0.95, and 50mm f/1.4 for M mount, and 7artisans made the 50mm f/1.1 as well as the Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 – So there are PLENTY of options for fast fifty lenses in a lot of different price ranges. The performance here reminds me a lot of the 7Artisans 28mm 1.4, which is good news. infinity (24mp Leica M10)The Brightin Star 50mm f1.4 has a calmer warmer feeling than the TTArtisan 50mm f1.2. The Pergear 50mm f1.8 is a bit on the wild side with its flaring and will often cast an orange / brown haze to the image, which is cool when you want it. I did not like the 7Artisans 55mm f1.4 so much. Mainly because of the build quality, but I would rank the image quality somewhere near the Brightin Star with the way it renders, overall pretty decent but the copy-to-copy variation on that lens was pretty wild, so wait for the new version if you like that brand. We will be looking at 100% crops from the 24mp Sony A7III and the Leica M10. Both cameras do not have an anti aliasing filter in front of the sensor. At half body portrait distance (roughly 1.2 to 1.5 m focus distance) the lens yields smooth blur and sharpness as well as contrast are good, exceeding my expecations.
