About this deal

Now, about that title: Elvis isn’t really a biopic about the legendary singer and his meteoric rise to fame. Many other films have that angle covered. Rather, it is also Colonel Tom Parker’s story – his version of it at least, and is told through the lens of Elvis’s ( Austin Butler, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood) complicated relationship with his cagey manager (a fat-suited Tom Hanks) who gets equal screen time. So, perhaps titling it Elvis and his Unscrupulous Manager might have been a more appropriate title. On second thought, just Elvis is probably good. Let’s face it, this film offers up one absolutely captivating visual presentation many thanks to the cinematography by the DP (director of photography) Mandy Walker. It also is one downright gorgeous film thanks to the costume and production design done by Catherine Martin, who happens to be the wife of the film’s director. “Elvis” [2022] is just as much fun to watch as it is to hear, and it looks incredible here in 4K physically on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format, enough to earn it a downright awesome 4.75 rating for video quality. The fact this comes from that higher 4.5K and 6.5K digital source material makes for one very nice 4K master and here on disc for one overall excellent 4K video presentation. Immediately you will undoubtedly notice that the height channels are used very tastefully for mostly the music and sound effects, to help build this large sound (as mentioned) which seems very fitting about this Atmos mix. The music here, all throughout, is driven primarily from the front left & right channel speakers, along with a very nice amount of rear channel presence, and (as mentioned) across the height channel speakers. Bigger Than Life: The Story of Elvis (22:22) - Baz Luhrmann, Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, costume designer Catherine

Elvis has survived the down-conversion to 1080p surprisingly well, especially considering it contains more than 2 1/2 hours of HD content and a included are English SDH, French, Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish subtitles. Supplements:

Viva Australia: Recreating Iconic Locations for Elvis– If you’ve ever been to Graceland you’ll see the amount of detail that went into the production design for this film. Musical Moments (19 clips, 46:19 total) - Think of these as song chapter selections; all of the performed songs and Newly restored in 4K Ultra HD with HDR-10 and Dolby Vision, Blue Hawaii will arrive on 4K UHD Digital for the first time as part of the Paramount Presents collection later this year. The film begins with an aging and decrepit Parker in the hospital going on and on about how wrong people are to blame him for Elvis’s death. After all, he’s the guy who discovered the greatest carnival show on Earth. He asserts, “without me, there would be no Elvis Presley.” While that’s probably true, we can’t help but wonder what Elvis might have become had the Colonel been a bit more hands off. We get a pretty good idea as the story plays out. We see the world of Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) through the eyes of Col. Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). He’s looking for an act that’ll set him for life. He hears about Elvis, a young singer whose musical style was influenced by R&B and gospel. Parker, who witnesses a crowd of young girls lose their minds at a concert, sets out to become Elvis’ manager and thus allowing Elvis to provide for his parents. The rest of the film is, well, things we already know. There’s the controversy of his “hip thrusting” on stage and cleaning up his act for television. And, later on, we meet Priscilla (Olivia DeJonge) and fathering his daughter, Lisa Marie. His movies, the drugs, the weight gain and his final years in Las Vegas. There weren’t a lot of creative liberties taken here, and that’s either the film’s strongest asset or its weakest link.

Say what you will about the director’s frenetic style, but it absolutely works here. Maintaining a complicated narrative style and consistent tone with a film like this is a difficult to task to pull off. Lose control, and this thing is a total disaster. Not only does Luhrmann succeed, it’s likely the biggest reason the film works as well as it does. For my thoughts on the included Blu-ray's 1080p transfer (which is where this review's 15 screenshots were sourced from), please see my separate review of that title which contains an additional 25 Director Baz Luhrmann's Elvis is almost exactly half of a great movie; Presley's story has always been a fascinating one, and the leadmusical icons is at least worth a once-over and, if nothing else, those more receptive to Luhrmann's very specific style of filmmaking may find Bonus materials included on the Blu-ray Disc are listed below. These are all in HD (high definition) with Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sound — unless otherwise noted below. counterpart, Warner Bros.' 1080p transfer still offers a very crisp and faithful representation of Elvis' specific appearance. A Blu-ray Disc of the film is included. This is in 1080p HD with Dolby Atmos sound. It also houses all of the bonus materials, listed a bit further below. Trouble” Lyric Video (2 minutes, 15 seconds – HD) is performed by Austin Butler, consists of clips from the film, and gives lyrics along the way. This is very cool.

place -- this formula genuinely produces an image evocative of a classic cinematic appearance. With the addition of artificial film grain, the illusion is Fit for a King: The Style of Elvis– Essentially the same as the others, though this one focuses on the costume design. it's entertaining enough for a watch and may score stronger with the late legend's most devoted fans, but Elvis wears out its welcome sooner

only quibble is that it seems mixed a few decibels lower than reference level, which includes the LFE channel, but listeners most will find this to be a Fit For a King: The Style of Elvis (HD, 8 Mins.) - Costume Designer Catherine Martin discusses all the major costumes for the film and how much work went into them.
