About this deal

In 1979, a TV executive decided it would be a good idea to use the parlour game charades as the basis for a light-hearted competition show. It ran for the next 13 years, was revived briefly in 1997 and then returned for one night only as part of the 2011 Comic Relief shenanigans. The guest list featured on this set is astronomical. It literally contains anyone who was popular at some stage up to that moment in time. It has to now hold the record for the most celebrities found on a Network box set. It’s an incredible roster of legends including Beryl Reid, Max Wall, Nicholas Parsons, Kenny Everett, Kenneth Williams, Richard O’Sullivan, Barbara Windsor, Diana Dors and so many more! There are even stars who I never expected to see, including Laugh-In’s Judy Carne, Derek Griffiths, Peter Butterworth, Jimmy Young, Roy Kinnear, Kenny Lynch, and Liz Fraser. The above is only the first few discs, and I’ve not even scratched the surface yet. I've just watched one of the most tense episodes in terms of points-angst, with Lionel's team not scoring a single point in the first half and getting thrashed overall. There was some redemption in Part Two with first-time player William Boyde nailing his performance of the appropriately-titled Shame And Scandal In The Family and winning Lionel's favour. In defence of the men's team, Derek Griffiths and Martin Jarvis were both lovely as well. The team just seemed less experienced overall than Liza's team (which was 75% old hands) and the male guests missed a lot of the simple shorthands given to them by Lionel during his turn. His frustration at trying to rally them was tangible. Give Us A Clue was a British televised game show, presented by Michael Aspel, running from 1979 to 1984, when the show changed presenters.

Gerry Anderson: A Life Uncharted - The Extended Director's Cut is also being released on Blu-ray by Network on the same date (this will likely have been posted about in the Network Blu-ray thread in the UK & Ireland sub-forum, along with a Blu-ray-only release of Presented in SuperColorisation (which has a UK release date of Monday 12th December, 2022). Many episodes are available online and I've fallen into the habit of watching an episode while nibbling my lunch. I rarely watch any kind of TV during the daytime, so it's a heady indulgence, and one I look forward to on those days I'm around the house. Yesterday is a cancelled cheque; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have - so spend it wisely. All anyone needs to do is guess something resembling the word at some point, without having a clue how it fits into the title, and he'll step in and put it together like the interfering Granddad who can't stop himself from moving a child's jigsaw puzzle about to prove his superior intelligence.

Well, with the flying humpty dumpty, that brings the score to sixteen to the girls, fourteen to the fellas, a nice close match.” BFI | Film & TV Database | GIVE US A CLUE[17/12/79] (1979)". The game is based on charades, a party game where players used mime rather than speaking to demonstrate a name, phrase, book, play, film or TV programme. Each player was given roughly two minutes to act out their given subject in front of his/her team, and if the others were unsuccessful in guessing correctly, the opposing team would have a chance to answer for a bonus point. This might explain my earlier comment about Parky intervening with pointers during play more than Michael Aspel did. They dropped the member of the public after an incident from the second show in the second series - the gentleman in Lionel's team read the wrong side of the card given to him, and thus mimed his own name! It’s all terribly cheesy. Some of the linking dialogue will make you groan out loud, but to be fair, it all adds to the charm of the piece. And although it’s hard to imagine anybody sitting through an entire disc in one go (it does get a wee bit repetitive after a while), playing along with the game can be fun, despite the fact that some of the titles are of long-forgotten songs or TV shows.
