About this deal

I think the most unexpectedly delightful tales from this book come from his forays into the TV world.

At the end of a McEnroe commentated match I'm also exhausted after the continuous verbal outpouring. He won seven Grand Slam singles titles, nine Grand Slam men's doubles titles, and one Grand Slam mixed doubles title. I bought his latest book (in a ridiculously over populated field of sports biographies), so despite my big reservations about so many aspects on the book, I'm conscious that I'm the mug for bringing on what turns out to be so predictable. I started explaining the rules (for that’s what I do during the Wimbledon Fortnight) but she quickly interrupted me by saying I might as well have been speaking Chinese. But hey, I was there in 80's Wimbledon and John McEnroe is a part of my life; and just like David Bowie he made us weirdos/ geeks feel just that bit more comfortable and empowered to deal with horrible unimaginative normal people.Sorry John but I think a more professional narrator would have done a better job and maybe Johns lack of modesty would have helped but Johns humility when talking about Patty and his dad is commendable.

Today I’m stepping safely back into my bookish comfort zone, albeit with a tennis-y feel: I finally got around to reading John McEnroe’s autobiography Serious. You do get the impression though from the way McEnroe speaks in the book that there are some things he would have liked to have done more in these past 15 years which have not quite worked out, particularly branching out into other areas of television or even acting. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. I raised the question with Better World Books and although they could not supply a hardcover version they were extremely generous in making up for the descepency. Anything about John McEnroe would be interesting so if you like tennis and McEnroe in particular it's a must. I am paying it forward by passing this book along to a friend and sports enthusiast who I think will enjoy it too. I guess Jimmy Connors was the every-ready bunny back in the day but he wasn't playing at the level to win majors in his 30s.
