They have an IP54 rating, which is a little lower than most workout headphones but will protect against dust and water splashing to some extent. I was pretty interested to see how the headphones’ AI noise cancellation would work, since, well, they are open-ear headphones. It worked pretty well on calls—a friend noted that it sounded like I was in a small room—but understandably, I could still hear everything going on around me. Despite being the most expensive pair of Shokz headphones, they don’t promise the biggest battery. Shokz says you should get up to 7 hours battery life, which is short of the 10 hours off a single charge from the OpenRun Pro. You can get a total of 28 hours when you factor in a fully charged charging case, plus a 5-minute charge gets you an hour of listening time. The buds have what Shokz is calling a dolphin arc ear hook design. This means there’s the main bulk of the bud that hangs next to your ear canal, which is held in place by a hook that slides behind your ear. The Shokz proprietary OpenBass algorithm, however, is astounding. It’s a full-bodied bass experience that feels like the music has suddenly acquired a whole other dimension. This will not be noteworthy if you don’t normally listen to music with a lot of bass, which I don’t. But turning Bass Boost on did prompt me to start bugging my coworkers for psychedelic trip-hop recommendations, which in turn prompted them to ask if I had started vaping. You can tinker with these settings in the Shokz app, which is currently only available on iOS but will be available for Android soon.

They never fell off, but the design creates the sense they might. It feels like there’s an issue with the weight and balance of weight between earhook and the main earbud element. I’ve tried other open ear speaker-style headphones before like the Cleer Arc and they felt more secure than the OpenFit.

What those battery numbers don’t illustrate is performance at different volumes or when using more powerful EQ modes. I found an hour at close to maximum volume using the Bass Boost EQ mode saw battery drop by 30-40%. That would equate to significantly less than the claimed 7 hours battery. Much better sound quality than previous models, but please refer to no 2 of the negatives. I have since tweaked the EQ more and it’s made it better, but at the expense of the range of bass.

The Shokz OpenFit come with a handy charging case that has a matte finish and USB-C charging.
