There's no need for supernatural terrors in a Pete Walker film because he shows us that real life is grottier and more horrible than any vampire or ghost. In House of Mortal Sin, Susan Penhaligon's character goes into church in a fit of pique and unwittingly triggers a chain of events that, in a "spiralling descent", destroys not only her life, but the lives of everyone she touches. Her helplessness in the face of others' disbelief, her inability to convince anyone that she's not just an overwrought and silly girl, and the way that the "Establishment" closes ranks to protect its own is plausibly frightening, especially in light of recent revelations about institutionalised abuse routinely covered up by the Church.Another negative factor was the casting of Norman Eshley to play the role of the younger priest. Norman Eshley was great in the TV sitcom, GEORGE AND MILDRED, and is clearly great at playing roles in comedic settings elsewhere. But serious acting roles are not his forte. Susan Penhaligon gave an equally great performance as the troubled young girl, Jenny. Her fear and torment are conveyed perfectly. In addition, she gives her character a certain level of naiveté that makes both her character more convincing and the viewer sympathetic. Meldrum's relationship with his mother has echoes ofPsycho("Oh mother… I need your help so badly. The old temptations have returned…") and the scene where mum hands Vanessa a note stating simply "Help me, my son is mad" is enough to bring the house down. And as for that ending… All through the film there are some lovely touches - Sheila Keith is awesome as Meldrum's one-eyed housekeeper, threatening his infirm mother ("He's gone out again, I'm afraid… you're all alone again… with me") and simply raising one eyebrow on surveying the scene following the rosary bead strangulation.

The cast here are pretty-stellar with standout performances by Anthony Sharp as the demented and fantastic performance as the unhinged and repressed Father Meldrum with his layered performance that's well-written for his tortured character. Pete Walker's mainstay Shelia Keith also gives a standout performance as the overbearing housekeeper with a sinister presence. Norman Eshley & Stephanie Beacham adds some much-needed warmth with their blossoming relationship & both have decent chemistry together, despite the movie's overwhelming gloom. Then there's Susan Penhaligon who plays the troubled Jenny who becomes the object of the priest's obsession. She does a fine job, but could have been given more to do, as she's pretty much absent from the climax. HOUSE OF MORTAL SIN (aka THE CONFESSIONAL MURDERS) is a highly underrated British horror movie directed by Pete Walker. I bought this movie as part of the Pete Walker Collection, a wonderful coffin shaped boxset containing this movie, along with FRIGHTMARE, THE HOUSE OF MORTAL SIN, THE HOUSE OF WHIPCORD and DIE SCREAMING MARIANNE. The said boxset is loaded with extras and is a must have for any fan of the director's movies. The film is already showing its typically grim 1970s attitude to everything with these few scenes. Jenny's boyfriend is a selfish womaniser, Jenny herself is a pathetic doormat, even the idealist young Bernard at one point says to Vanessa: "There are things wrong with the church, but every job has its problems…" We've also seen a Brit horror cliché turned on its head - in what other film is a crucifix shining out of the darkness a symbol of terror? Hence, if a person knowingly ( full knowledge) and wantingly ( full consent) commits an action consisting of any of the grave matter listed above, a mortal sin is committed.

House of Mortal Sin sees British exploitation legends David McGillivray and Pete Walker having fun at the expense of Catholicism, depicting the murderous antics of a sexually frustrated Catholic priest with a mother complex whose mind has been twisted by a lifetime of repressed carnal urges. It should be a whole lot of salacious silliness, but sadly falls short of the mark. In this movie Pete Walker continues to demonstrate that he, along with the equally great director, Norman J. Warren, were the natural successors to Hammer, Amicus and Tigon. The three companies in question had dominated the British horror movie industry for over a decade, having made some truly superb productions. All three had ceased to produce horror movies at this point, paving the way for the two mentioned excellent directors to make independent movies now rightly appreciated as minor classics of low-budget cinema.
