About this deal

Because all products performed fairly well, comfort became a very important category. Like most questions of fit, comfort is subjective and may depend on head size and shape. The Belay Specs look futuristic, but they were hit-or-miss for comfort. Portability & Features

At the end of all our testing, we scored the glasses on three categories: functionality, comfort, and features/portability. Functionality The first belay glasses were invented in 2007 by climber Albi Schneider from Germany. [ citation needed] Gallery [ edit ] This feature is really convenient because it allows the belayer to switch in and out of wearing the belay specs easily with one hand, so they can do this while belaying depending on where the climber is.the peripheral field around the sides of the lenses, allowing the belayer to remain aware of their surroundings. We did experience some slight distortion in the image. It was unclear to us if the bottom-most angle caused features to be elongated, or if the top-most angles caused compression. Lever goes up/down for 60-120 degrees of prism adjustability Prism size Field of View: Belay specs offer a standard 60° field of view that all fixed-prism glasses have. Peripheral vision is excellent because of the thin metal frame. The CU belay glasses feature regular sized optics on a thin metal frame with flexible arms that don’t require hinges. I found that the thin metal frame was a bit flexible and would allow the lenses to twist slightly if I didn’t get them balanced right. This was especially hard if pushing the temples under a helmet or hat. Of course any twist in the frame would misalign the prisms and result in a slightly out of focus image. The optics themselves are fantastic.

How pleasant are the glasses to wear? How much do I notice them on my face? How comfortable am I during long belays? The main objective of belay glasses is to look through the prisms to watch your climber. However, it’s important to be able to see around the glasses sometimes as well. We looked at how well you can see over, under and to the side of the prisms. Y and Y (or Y&Y) belay glasses are high-quality glasses by Y&Y, which are known for their great performance and quality design. They all serve the same basic function, but the different styles and price ranges will suit different people depending on what they want out of their specs.First, consider the environment. If you are climbing in the gym or on a crag with a straightforward approach, although you don’t have to worry about tripping over objects by your feet, one still has to be aware of other climbers and have spatial awareness of the wall. This is an appropriate time to use belay glasses which give increased importance to the view through the prism over peripheral vision. If climbing in an area with less secure footing or more hazardous environment, one should employ the use of belay glasses that give equal importance to peripheral vision as well as the view through the prisms. PitchSix has created the worlds first adjustable angle belay glasses. With a small easy-to-use lever, you can adjust the angle of the prism to follow your climber up the wall.

We multiplied the feature score against the feature weight to come up with an overall winner. Your personal weighting may be different, so we’re presenting this information with as much transparency as possible so you can so you can make your own decision about which pair is right for you. Feature OverviewField of View: Belaggles are a fixed-prism glasses therefore have a standard 60° field of view. Peripheral vision is poor because the frames are so beefy, though it is in profile to your line of sight.
