Les Daniels (1975). Living in Fear: A History of Horror in the Mass Media. Da Capo Press, (P. 17). Hell: Vathek, Nouronihar, and Carathis end up there (called "The Palace of Subterranean Fire" in the story) in their quest for power. Has a fire and brimstone aspect in that the hearts of sinners are consumed with the flames of their sins such that it shines through their bodies. Despite already carrying an extensive harem on the journey, Vathek decides to seduce the young Nouronihar, ignoring Muslim hospitality laws, while the ugly eunuch starts chasing after the innocent boy. Faking the Dead: Fakreddin, Nouronihar’s father, does this with her and Gulchenrouz in an attempt to keep Vathek away from her. It doesn't work.

INTRODUCTION

If the mix of fantasy and farce is a precursor to Romanticism, so, too, is the most innovative aspect of the work: the dense, scholarly footnotes that accompany the text. The casual mention of genii in the story (a term which was already well-known to English readers by 1786) receives a veritable dissertation in the notes, claiming, “It is asserted, and not without plausible reasons, that the words Genn, Ginn, Genius, Genie, Gian, Gigas, Giant, Geant proceed from the same themes…as if these supernatural agents had been an early production of the earth, long before Adam was modelled [sic] out from a lump of it.” Carathis, herself an adept in the magical dark arts, warns Vathek against visits to cities or palaces during the journey, but the Caliph and his extensive caravan soon take shelter from storms and fires in the palace of a benevolent Emir. Edgar Allan Poe mentions the infernal terrace seen by Vathek in "Landor's Cottage". Stéphane Mallarmé, who translated Poe's poems into French, inspired by this reference in "Landor's Cottage," had Vathek reprinted in its original French, for which edition he also supplied a preface. [10] In his book English Prose Style, Herbert Read cited Vathek as "one of the best fantasies in the language". [11] Fortress of Aherman – a fortress in which demons would gather to receive the commands of their lord. [6] (p116)

Afrit – described as a creature comparable to the Lamia and Medusa, depicted as the cruelest type of demon ( div) in Vathek. [6] Simurgh – a wise and miraculous bird, friendly towards "the sons of Adam" and an enemy to the divs.

There is nothing so delicious, in his estimation, as the heart of a young boy palpitating with the first tumults of love. [the Giaour] Bugünün yeraltı edebiyatı okurunun ilgi alanına girebilecek tarzda bir kitap olan Vathek; kendi tarzında ilk olmasına rağmen yazıldığı dönemden bu yana klasik kabul edilmeyi başarabilmiş bir eser. The Spanish musician Luis Delgado has published an album called Vathek (1982), inspired by the literary work. This Giaour [in Romanian language this is a word borrowed from Turkish, meaning foreigner or infidel] refuses to reveal the source of his artefacts or his own history, enflaming the passions of Vathek and inspiring him to acts of terrible cruelty against children and young men. Although having no story role in the game, Vathek is seen flying through the skies of The Wingwarrens as the Skylander makes their way through the lands. At the top of the peak, Vathek appears and engages the Skylander in battle.

as her rage at reading the dissolute conduct of her son.“Is it so?” said she; “either I will perish, or Vathek’ could be dismissed by the modern reader as a rather derivative Arabian Tales fan fiction, but the focus on monsters and demons and evil doers instead of humorous or educative fables paves the way for the rise in prominence of the gothic- romantic school, in particular Lord Byron who held Vathek in high appreciation and wrote his own orientalist poems. Evil All Along: Carathis is introduced as just Vathek’s mother who wants him cured of his strange illness, but as soon as he mentions the promise the Giaour made to him, she reveals that she has been practicing magic for decades and has a laboratory under the castle in which she practices necromancy and human sacrifice. From that point, she basically becomes the leader, pushing her son into ever greater villainy.
