This is not an exact copy of the planning from The Power of Reading. It is inspired by the planning - taking some lessons and elements and combining it with my school’s approach to writing. I took it to Memorial School, (on Fridays we had a dance in the gym for 6th. graders) and it was a hit. It also involves building up skills for children to write about an event that happens in the forest to the main character where he sees something scary in the bushes, runs away and then realises it was only a small animal such as a bunny or an owl. This gives the children opportunity to show, not tell emotions of fear, nervousness and relief.
