About this deal

Following the “fun auditions” Pattinson shot with co-star Kristen Stewart for the 2008 film were shown to Summit Entertainment execs, who were not completely Team Pattinson.

This realisation was something that jumped up and walloped me in the face. A stark revelation that all this time I hadn't been enjoying these dramas in the way that I thought I had. In fact - worse than that, other people had been enjoying it notched up at full capacity, lavishly cloaked in the ardour of it all while I had been served a counterfeit substitute. I know this now because I have experienced the intimate connection, the emotional swell, that comes with a piece of storytelling in which you see yourself. Only now do I understand that I was never truly able to engage with the stories in a romantically involved way - in the way that I have now come to understand other people who see themselves depicted do. Fennell loves to show off her characters' ghastly eccentricities almost as much as she loves to show off their gleaming, sweaty skin, so it may be a while before you notice that nothing much is actually happening. There is some intrigue as to whether Oliver should be afraid of the family or vice versa. There are also some sexual shenanigans which suggest that while Oliver would really like to sleep with Felix, he'll make do with any substitute he can find. But the film has a structural problem, which is that most of its plotting is saved for the final stretch. For much of the running time, Fennell is vague about everyone's motivations and actions, so the film drifts along. And then she suddenly hurries through several major revelations with the speed of someone who wants to reach the end of an anecdote before their phone battery runs out. As a Mixed-Race woman of colour who grew up in the UK loving period literature and storytelling - perhaps against the odds - I can tell you first-hand that these casting decisions are pivotal. Sofia Coppola On Real Reasons She Passed On Directing 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn'& Live-Action Version Of 'The Little Mermaid' In some ways, I am loath to admit that it was not until I watched Bridgerton that I realised that I had never truly experienced period drama in the way that I believe it is supposed to be experienced, because I had never seen someone who looked like me be truly involved in the romance of it. I have always had a rich imagination, and yet, I had never been able to transport myself into one of these scenes. In my mind's eye I was always watching the characters from the other side of the glass.I had never truly experienced period drama in the way that I believe it is supposed to be experienced, because I had never seen someone who looked like me be truly involved in the romance of it.
