About this deal

Either way, books like this are both objective and can be very subjective too so I was able to take both parts and apply them to my journey and get rich insights into the author's journey which I really appreciated.

My initial reason for reading Hormonal: A Conversation About Women's Bodies, Mental Health and Why We Need to Be Heard was my tiresome periods, same rationale as for the other book about menstruation I've come across, Period Power: Harness Your Hormones and Get Your Cycle Working For You. GABA does the opposite and tells the cells not to 'fire' It is effectively our natural tranquilliser.

All we have to do is tap into this powerful evolutionary mechanism to better understand ourselves and our bodies. Morgan peels away the mysteries of hormonal changes while stating clearly how long these discussions have been silenced.

Broken fingers, headaches, tonsillitis, bruises, scratches and bite- marks from fighting with my siblings. But knowing that my biology is part of the picture, that a hormonal surge is a temporary thing, sometimes gives me a touchstone. I honestly cannot tell to what extent that reflects the differences between the books and to what extent it reflects how I've changed in the past four years. In all the appointments I’ve had with GPs and gynaecologists I’ve been through a kind of re- education of what my body does and why.

As the tone of this review probably suggests, my current attitude to mental health is relevant to how I received Hormonal: A Conversation About Women's Bodies, Mental Health and Why We Need to Be Heard. The hidden intelligence of the hormonal cycle and its role in empowering women to succeed sexually, reproductively, and socially.I don't know what Haselton's opinions on testosterone are, but she is definitely not here to tell us that hormones don't impact our behavior. Aside from the overuse of the currently trendy terms “speak her truth” and “gaslighting”, the author provides an interesting (and first for me) glimpse into the world of women’s bodies and the hormonal changes that happen not only monthly but across our lifetime - puberty, pregnancy, breastfeeding, peri-menopause and menopause. My personal experience of seeking treatment for PMS and for the sadness, heightened sensitivity and anxiety I can feel during my cycle, only to reach the point where I effectively ran out of treatment options, made me realise how entrenched my analysis of my own thoughts and behaviour was in more general ideas of how I ‘should’ or ‘shouldn’t’ be as a person; a woman. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data.

As Morgan argues, we've gotten better at talking about mental health, but we still shy away from discussing periods, miscarriage, endometriosis and menopause. To myself and others who hadn’t yet ‘started’, they seemed a different species because their bodies knew things ours didn’t. Just like with all scientific studies, these findings should be taken with a grain of salt considering the sample sizes and locations where they took place.

When it comes to our bodies, in so many areas, our voice and our autonomy continue to be the weakest currencies. Prefaced with a foreword from the author of Please Read This Leaflet Carefully, Karen Havelin, contributors discuss topics such as periods, steroid use, chronic illness, transitioning, men’s fertility and menopause with refreshing openness and honesty. An interesting overview of the history of hormones and the author's journey to understanding why her own hormones seem to be out to get her. In this paradigm-shifting book, Martie Haselton explains how hormonal intelligence works - both its strengths and its weaknesses - and shows women how to track and understand their desires, fears and perceptions with a radical new understanding of the biological processes that profoundly influence our behaviour. Maybe I am biased as I prefer straight-to-the-point factual works, but waiting for the author to ramble through her emotional opinions just to get some facts was not worth it to me.
