About this deal

Knowing that the Kumite is illegal under Hong Kong law, Janice hopes to see the police get involved in stopping the competition. Captions proceed to give Dux's career fight stats in the Kumite over several years, saying he established four records that were still standing at the time of the movie's release, and that he retired undefeated, before establishing his own martial arts school.Suddenly they hear a whistle behind them and turn to see Dux just inside the plane's boarding doorway, telling them to hurry up. The first-round bouts are conducted, showing several participants standing out as victorious and forces to be reckoned with -- a Polynesian fighter named Parades (Michel Qissi), a Chinese kung-fu fighter named Chuan Ip Mung (Dennis Chu), a big and burly Japanese Sumo fighter named Pumola (David Ho), a Muay Thai kickboxer named Paco (Paulo Tocha), Jackson, and Chong Li, who is the current champion. In Timecop, a science fiction action film based on a Dark Horse Comics series set in the near future, Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Max Walker, an agent with the United States Time Enforcement Commission.

We're shown that you have to get into a rig, which looks kind of like a carnival ride crossed with the vehicles from 'Star Tours,' which shoots you into a void, at which point you pop up at some designated spot in time. A more suitable double-feature bill, I would argue, would be 'Timecop' and 'Hard Target,' since they were both released by Universal and produced, oddly enough, by filmmaker Sam Raimi. Hossein is amused and overly cocky at the challenge, but the smirk is wiped off his face when Dux succeeds in grabbing the coin. While in Hong Kong, Dux befriends a rowdy American fighter named Ray Jackson (Gibb) and a reporter named Janice Kent (Ayres). We use cookies to give you the best possible experience on our site, provide personalised content and advertising, analyse our traffic, and ensure you see more of what you love.Dux and Janice are talking as they take a walk, and Janice tells Dux about her ambition to get a story on the Kumite, which she describes as 'a cockfight, except with people. Capelight Pictures, in association with ‎ Altitude Film Distribution, will bring to 4K Blu-ray Newt Arnold's cult film Bloodsport (1988), starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Donald Gibb, Leah Ayres, Norman Burton, and Forest Whitaker. Except that, of course, his wife is killed by people associated with the time travel technology and it sets him on a quest for vengeance.

The movie begins with montages of various hopeful competitors training and practicing their fighting techniques. Jackson is unconscious and bleeding profusely from his mouth as Chong Li pulls off Jackson's biker bandanna and claims it as a trophy, shaking it in front of Dux as a dire warning. But by the time Jackson turns back to face Chong Li, the burly Chinese fighter has risen back to his feet and is ready to show the whole crowd what happens to people who try to make a mockery of him. Neither mix is particularly heavy on atmospherics or ambience, things that would deliver a nice, full-bodied surround sound experience. While grain is finer and sharpness better than Bloodsport, the image exhibits unusually high contrast during its many very dark scenes. Those so inclined are welcome to try to wrestle with its awesomeness in the discussion thread accompanying this review, perhaps through poetry or raw testimonials about how the mullet affected you on a personal level. I can say that I was pleased when his publicist or barber forced shears upon him and redireced his status as a power-symbol of the 80's party-mop. He tells Dux that when he fights, Tanaka's spirit will be there, fighting beside him, and in the Kumite, he will need it.

While Frank advances, he knows that he may have to face Chong Li, the defending champion, who has killed a few participants. Each movie suffers from wonky skin tones (in both movies the humans seem to take on a George Hamilton-esque orange tint), to weak black levels, and excessive amounts of grain.

Bloodsport is presented with video and audio limited somewhat by its low-budget 1980s origins, while Timecop has outstanding surround audio appropriate for its action bombast along with a video presentation marred only by some minor issues with its high-contrast/low-light cinematography. It's just that the sub-par audio and video, and lack of any extras whatsoever, doesn't make it any more appetizing. Frank Dux has spent most his life being trained by Tanaka to participate in the Kumite, the ultimate martial arts tournament, where participants are seriously injured, even killed. Chuan gives Chong Li the stiffest resistance he's encountered in the Kumite, but even he cannot withstand the power of Chong Li's blows. While Van Damme is a much better actor than he was when he made Bloodsport, Director Hyams takes no chances, tailoring the part for his abilities and ensuring that an action sequence erupts every eight to ten minutes before things can start to drag too much.
