About this deal

Once again Lesley has come up with a brilliant story which although is life changing for the character Alice , could be totally believable . Sally as a character goes through a number of name changes throughout the book for various reasons, all of which do become clear but it does require some attention to keep track of who she was and why she altered her name. The sadness and abuse of Sally’s childhood are heartbreaking but her determination to survive makes for an excellent read.

They eventually got to go home again when their father remarried a sharp ex-Army nurse and was joined later by two more kids that were adopted by their father and stepmother, as well as a series of foster children that would come through. It’s tricky to allude to them without spoiling the story, but I thoroughly appreciated the harsh reality Lesley Pearse depicts of life for women throughout the middle decades of the last century. Sally was very much a closed book but with her new found surprising information Alice is very much determined to open it up. But when she is sent all the way to France and she is working there as an ambulance driver, the past comes flooding back to Belle.

Alice starts to dig into her mother’s past and she throws up some surprising facts that she perhaps wished she had left buried but at the same time a clearer picture of her heritage starts to form for her and along the way she does find some romance. It is 1910 in London, and a young girl has grown up in a brothel all her life without ever knowing it.

This story is cleverly written from Alice’s perspective and as Alice is on her journey of discovery, it switches to that of her mum. I liked the social aspects of down-at-heel London, to Bristol and Devon, over the course of 40 or so years. Even though she is the golden girl for right now of the prostitution world in this bustling southern city, she knows that she only has so long to dominate this cage before it turns into a prison once more that holds her forever. She hadn’t had an easy life and even when she did find her peace, I’m sure her past troubled her right until the end.
