In 1939 Jean Adigard des Gautries created the flag of Saint Olaf, a Nordic cross flag inspired by the Papal Cross borne on a standard by William the Conqueror. The Le Mouvement Normand adopted this flag in the 1970s, and it is used unofficially by some associations and individuals, especially those with an interest in the Viking origins of the Normans, although the Normans are also of Celtic ( Belgae and Gauls) and Continental Germanic ( Franks) origins. A flag combining the Saint-Olaf and the P'tit Cats, called the Croix de Falaise ( Falaise cross) can sometimes be seen. Local authority flag. All the devices on the flag come from arms of various Earls of Stafford. The red chevron on gold was the arms of the de Staffords. It is charged with the family's famous Stafford knot badge. The lion represents the authority of the council. The arms of Richard I are only known from two armorial seals, and hence the tinctures can not be determined. When further considering one lion rampant or three passant we must also bear in mind that in the 1190s the shield remained kite-shaped after the Norman style rather than heater-shaped style as was more popular later. Into such geometry a lion rampant fits nicely, as do three beasts passant in aesthetically pleasing fashion, 16 but two lions passant do not – even appearing to “float” surrounded by empty space. As I have demonstrated elsewhere (Anglo-Norman Armory, 1976) the lion of Flanders led the field 1 as insignia of royal houses. It is not then, surprising to find the English kings bearing a single lion rampant as well. Stanford London, The Coat of Arms, vol. 2, p. 291 and Royal Beasts (1954)), the seal of “Willelmus frater Henrici Regis” attached to a document dated before the winter of 1163 (Facsimiles of Early Charters from Northamptonshire Collections, ed. F. M. Stenton, Northants Record Society Vol. IV, 1930, pp. 24-16) is undoubtedly for William FitzEmpress, brother of Henry II, who probably died 30th January 1163/4. The royal arms of England is the coat of arms historically used as arms of dominion by the monarchs of the Kingdom of England, and now used to symbolise England generally, but not officially. [1] The arms were adopted c.1200 by the Plantagenet kings and continued to be used by successive English and British monarchs; they are currently quartered with the arms of Scotland and Ireland in the coat of arms of the United Kingdom.
