About this deal

Suggesting a solution for Gay's new discourse for discussing inequality, Evaristo provides the narratives of these 12 characters so that readers can sincerely relate to their experiences on a humanistic level rather than reducing them to a stereotype. The characters are used as mouthpieces for statements like that: “Her mother was unthinkingly repeating patterns of oppression based on gender”

Begs to be devoured in one sitting . . . deliciously dramatic and sinister . . . If you're in the market for a lighter suspense read with a genuinely jaw-dropping finale, Sandie Jones' debut belongs on your TBR."— Crime by the Book Evaristo is 61 years old and has already published 8 novels, winning the Man Booker with this one. It rankles me that I only heard of her after the Booker Prize win. She is also quite simply the most dynamic and remarkable woman I wish I knew growing up. I love love loved to hate these characters - they are nutty in the best way possible. They were truly driving Holly and myself bananas the whole read, and that is the best kind of character for me. If you can create a vivid response from me, whether positive or negative, then job well done! Bernadine Evaristo captures the subtle quirks and failings of her characters with biting wit. But she also captures their vulnerabilities and strengths with equal candour. We get into their heads. Now, I have to say, If I had been Emily, I would have run away from Adam screaming because it was obvious that his mother comes first in his heart. And that would be a problem regardless. I kept wondering if I was in my 20s and unmarried would I have been more willing to try to make the relationship work, like Emily was. His super closeness to his mother might be easy to overlook if Pammie was not quite so despicable and hell bent on ruining their relationship. It appears as if Pammie wants Emily gone from her son's life and is willing to lie, scheme, and manipulate to get what she wants. Adam is oblivious to his mother's antics. He defends his Mother and often blames Emily for the rift and distance between the two women. That reason I gave this book 4 stars, rather than 5, is that red flags, as big as a barn, are slapping Emily in the face, concerning the actions of Adam and Pammie. Emily seems to hang on to her first impressions of Adam, without giving consideration to how he changes over time, and the fact that Adam gives no weight to her thoughts or feelings. Add that to his scheming and cruel mom and I can't see why she was willing to fight for a relationship that seemed not worth the time and effort. But I'm not Emily, so I set aside those thoughts and just enjoyed the book for the psychological thriller it is, all the way through the twist ending. What does it mean to be a woman today? Does a woman now have the same hopes, dreams & aspirations as a woman did 20, 30, 50 years ago? Does anything ever really change? Girl, Woman, Other is the eighth novel by Bernardine Evaristo. Published in 2019 by Hamish Hamilton, it follows the lives of 12 characters in the United Kingdom over the course of several decades. The book was the co-winner of the 2019 Booker Prize, alongside Margaret Atwood's The Testaments.

Liverpool Street station with its inter-galactic glass and steel ceiling propped up by towering Corinthian columns I found the female characters to be well developed, but the male characters slightly less so. I never saw the big appeal of Adam and didn’t find myself really believing their love story, but I certainly believed in it more than the supposed relationship with James. For me, that relationship wasn’t developed enough to be anything more than a platonic relationship with mutual attraction between the two. I sensed they were drawn to each other, but not that they had ever acted upon it. Did I miss some critical scene? A twisty, deliciously fun read."— Sarah Pekkanen, New York Times bestselling co-author of The Wife Between Us The characters in this book are fantastic, some you will love to hate and there are some you will love. I love when an Author can pull of characters that readers love to hate. I think that is a gift and, in this book, made the book even more enjoyable. Talking about enjoyable, I enjoyed this book from beginning to end but that ending.... Read and find out! Other reviewers are recommending going into this book blind with only the brief synopsis to light your way. I agree with this approach. Beatrice Cade is an orphan, unmarried and childless. After her brother's death, she decides to make a new life for herself. She takes a room in a Bloomsbury ladies’ club and a job in the City. But just when her new world is starting to take shape, a fleeting encounter threatens to ruin everything.

Frazer-Carroll, Micha (8 May 2019). "Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo review – joy as well as struggle". The Guardian. The man I fictionalise as Tom Ryan got newspaper headlines, hours of courtroom time, people prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt – and one hundred years later, it’s still too often the male perpetrators of abuse that news report focus on; it’s their stories that we read. Glenister, Emily (6 April 2020). "Goldsboro Books Glass Bell Longlist 2020". Goldsboro Books . Retrieved 4 May 2020.

I went to hand him the tenner as he placed the glass in front of me, but he shook his head. “No need,” he said. “Please accept it with the compliments of the gentleman who jumped the queue.”I think at the heart of every novel is a question that the writer wants to explore (What would happen if…? How would it feel to…?) – for me, the initial question was: Why would this intelligent, middle-aged, respectable woman – who had so much in her life that was positive and good – risk everything that mattered to her for a man who was already married? I could not understand why or how Emily fell for Adam, or vice versa, as the characters seemed immature and their relationship based completely on sex.
