The second disc features five live multi-track recordings from the Yo Yo A Go Go Festival in Olympia, WA in 1997, as well as three previously unreleased studio recordings and one b-side gem. Recorded in several locations mostly in Portland, Oregon while Smith was still in Heatmiser and produced by Smith, Tom Roth rock and Rob Schnapf, Either/Or was released on February 25, 1997 through record label Kill Rock Stars following the demise of Heatmiser. Blessed with the voice of a wispy angel, Elliott Smith created sad little pop songs, which, like the work of Nick Drake (to whom he's been compared) threaten to disappear into the night air. Following the album's release, Smith would be struck to the forefront of popular culture after performing the song "Miss Misery", which appeared in the film Good Will Hunting, at the 1998 Academy Awards. The gently insinuating despair of Smith's work communicates volumes about the heartbreak and alienation that is the bane of 20th century boys with too much time on their hands. There are some wonderful acoustic songs on here - not least the booze-stained Between the Bars ("Drink up baby, stay up all night/with the things you could do - you won't, but you might"), the spectrally beautiful Angeles ("Someone's always coming around here, trailing some new kill" and the claustrophobic, desolate 2.The melodies and harmonies on here are achingly lovely, the vocals so hushed and fragile they're almost whispered, and the lyrics unrelentingly, heartbreakingly sad.

The double LP is packaged in a gatefold jacket that includes an insert of the original liner notes, a postcard of the original master tapes, and several never-before seen photos. Every record is shipped in original factory-applied shrink wrap and has never been touched by human hands. Although that's a word which has been overused so much, especially in recent times that it has become almost cringe-worthy, don't cringe when you hear it said of Elliott, because he really does merit such a title. It's the ideal bridge between the skeletal sparseness of his early work and the lush studio orchestration of his later stuff, which is a touch over-produced for me.

It's no secret that Smith dealt with alcoholism and addiction, but through his music you can see that he was able to experience love as well.
