About this deal

This book is brilliant! I ended up staying an hour later at night still reading it, due to its cliffhangers at the end of each chapter. I would read it a hundred times if I had to! Added to all this, David’s books have achieved unprecedented critical acclaim: Awful Auntie, Ratburger and Demon Dentist won the National Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year and in France David was awarded the popular Tamtam for Mr Stink and the prestigious Le Prix Du Livre De La Jeunesse for Ratburger, so it comes as no surprise that countless broadsheet reviewers have compared David to his all-time hero, Roald Dahl. My last book haul comprised of illustrated books in varied genres and I couldn't resist adding the latest offering from David Walliams to the selection. This book is enhanced by Tony Ross’ perfect illustrations. The partnership of Walliams and Ross is a match made in heaven. The way the illustrations perfectly capture the story and add an awesome visual layer to this book makes for an unforgettable reading experience.

The book is about a school called ‘The Cruel School’ and as you have probably guessed, it is horrible. It is where naughty children go and face their consequences. In the school there is an evil scientist and her laboratory assistant; the pair create a machine that turns you into monsters. Could they be more evil? On a volcanic island, in the middle of shark-infested waters, stands The Cruel School. The lessons are appalling, the school dinners are revolting and the teachers are terrifying – especially the mysterious Science teacher Doctor Doktur. I am a massive fan of David Walliams’ book so I was very excited to get my hands on this book. Given that I have read all of David Walliams' books I went into this one with high hopes. I am happy to say it definitely lived up to my high expectations. As well as being a No.1 best-selling Children’s author, David Walliams is one of Britain's most popular writers and comic actors. It has been a while since Walliams wrote a story about a girl with wit as sharp as a smooth edge of paper, a delightful sense of humour, and courage that fails at nothing. (... other than sharks?) On a volcanic island, in the middle of shark-infested waters, stands The Cruel School. The lessons are appalling, the school dinners are revolting and the teachers are terrifying - especially the mysterious Science teacher Doctor Doktur. Here, you meet the weirdest characters caught in bizarre situations which are curiously entertaining. They are annoying, rude, and mean but there is a worthy lesson to be imbibed from the exciting adventure this book takes you on. As well as his Children’s fiction, David has also published four number one bestselling picture books, his latest, The Bear Who went Boo! was published in November 2015 and has had total sales of over 85,000 to date. The Queen’s Orang-utan, David’s third picture book was written exclusively for Comic Relief with David giving all of his proceeds from the book to the charity.

This follows on from the success of Grandpa’s Great Escape, Awful Auntie, Demon Dentist, Ratburger and Gangsta Granny. All went straight to Children’s number one on release with Gangsta Granny and Billionaire Boy selling over a million copies to date. David has proved himself as a dramatic actor in BBC2's 'Capturing Mary' with Dame Maggie Smith, in BBC1's Agatha Christie series 'Partners In Crime', as Frankie Howerd in the biopic ‘Rather You Than Me’ for BBC4, and on the stage in Harold Pinter’s 'No Man’s Land' starring alongside Sir Michael Gambon. He received the Comedy Award at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his performance as Bottom in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ directed by Michael Grandage. If you like to be grossed out by stuff then this is the book for you. I also enjoyed this book because in the school there are a bunch of horrible teachers that made me laugh. I believe this book is good for any age even if they have to have it read to them. Once again, I loved this book because it was very entertaining!

One of the greatest elements of this book; as with all David Walliams’ books, is that it perfectly walks the naughty line. Young readers get to read a wonderful book that is a little bit rude, a whole lot of fun, and totally addictive. Mr Stink, Gangsta Granny, The Boy in the Dress and Billionaire Boy have all been adapted into TV comedy dramas. David’s books have also been made into theatre productions including Mr Stink, Gangsta Granny, Ratburger and The First Hippo on the Moon.
