About this deal

Some players like to drill a hole in the plunger mute to improve the sound, though whether the sound is any better is a personal opinion. If you don’t like the idea of using a toilet plunger as your mute, we can buy a professionally made plunger mute that was purpose-made for trumpet muting, not toilet plunging.

Trombone mutes come in a variety of configurations. Trombone mutes are used to change the volume or the tonal quality of your instrument.Flugelhorns are never really asked to play with mutes. Flugel mutes do exist but it seems like some kind of blasphemy to alter the mellow, rich sound of the flugel in that way. Even pros won’t be expected to have a vast array of flugel mutes. The TrumCor Trumpet Super Stealth Mute is well-known in the trumpet community for being one of the best practice mutes you can buy. Each of these mutes is hand-crafted in Tennessee, Maryland, and Texas using a resonant fiber material.

A mute is a device attached to a musical instrument which changes the instrument's tone quality (timbre) or lowers its volume. Mutes are commonly used on string and brass instruments, especially the trumpet and trombone, and are occasionally used on woodwinds. Their effect is mostly intended for artistic use, but they can also allow players to practice discreetly. Muting can also be done by hand, as in the case of palm muting a guitar or grasping a triangle to dampen its sound. Easy. A mute. Mutes are called for during different parts of music scores by the arranger when they want to change the timbre (tone quality) and/or lower the volume. They soften the brightness of the trumpet and some mutes warm the sound. Funny thing, mutes are named for their shape and not how they sound. Don’t you just love the English language where a word can have so many different uses and meanings. For example, the word “mute” /myoot/ can be: Mutes for string instruments of the violin family work by adding mass to the bridge, [58] or occasionally by dampening the strings behind the bridge. [3] Made of wood, metal, rubber, plastic, or leather, [59] they result in a darker, less brilliant sound because they dampen high-frequency vibrations in the bridge and shift its resonances to lower frequencies. [3] [60] This type of mute was introduced in the 17th century. [4] They are used in performance, to change the tone of the instrument, or during practice, to minimize disturbing others by reducing volume considerably. [61] Practice mutes are generally heavier than performance mutes. [62]As a general rule of thumb, keep all writing for muted trumpets on the stave, and muted trombones no more than one or two ledger lines above. This mute is also called a "wah-wah" mute which is probably more appropriate, as Harmon is the brand name. Similar to calling it "Kleenex" instead of facial tissue.
