About this deal

The Norton Anthology provides a very good biography of each author, which then gives you sufficient background knowledge to be able to understand the primary texts. Denean Sharpley-Whiting, the award-winning Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Distinguished Professor at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. While it could be argued that this would make for an even thicker and longer text, it is something that this volume certainly lacks. A foremost historian of contemporary literary criticism and theory, he is the author of the standard history, American Literary Criticism from the 1930s to the 1980s as well as Deconstructive Criticism and Cultural Criticism , Literary Theory , Poststructuralism (all three books published by Columbia UP), Postmodernism: Local Effects, Global Flows (SUNY Press), Theory Matters (Routledge), Living with Theory (Blackwell), and American Literary Criticism since the 1930s , 2nd edition (Routledge).

Not that useful for the section on Freud either - his work can be found in easier to read formats and many times free. The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism is the gold standard for anyone who wishes to understand the development and current state of literary theory. One thing I found very helpful in this book were the author biographies before each of the critical works.A book that has served me well for my English undergraduate degree; a great wealth and variety of philosophers' and theorists' seminal texts along with biographical information and explanation of major themes.

Obviously, some excerpts are covered in more detail than others, as the book is only approximately 2700 pages long and therefore doesn't contain the full publications by each of these figures, merely snippets and excerpts.T. Denean Sharpley-Whiting is Professor of French, Professor and Director of African American and Diaspora Studies, and Director of the W. I say that despite the fact that it's seriously skimpy on texts written before 1900 (all of which are crammed into the first third of the book) and in Latin America (none, unless you count Gloria Anzaldúa, an American). This is a highly useful book for any students of literature, critical theory, philosophy, anthropology, cultural studies, media or history. Sin embargo, el libro estaba manchado por el lado (en la foto se ve mejor de lo que es) y las esquinas como si se hubieran golpeado. This is one of the most useful/favorite books in my library, which is to say that the (bible-thin) pages are wrinkled and dirty from my fingertips paging over them--and that's saying quite a lot, since I take ridiculously good care of my books.

I personally enjoyed the opportunity to experience some new (and in some cases improved) translations of familiar works, particularly a selection of wonderfully eloquent excerpt from Nietzsche's 'Birth of Tragedy' translated by Ronald Spiers which was a refreshing change from my Kauffmann and Hollingdale editions.

I got this for only 20 bucks and over the course of a year and a half I got much more than my money's worth out of it. The first edition was published in 2001, with a second edition published in 2010 and a third in 2018.

Williams is Professor of English and of Literary and Cultural Studies at Carnegie Mellon University. This is a monstrous anthology; it was used as the primary textbook for my Critical Theory and Literary Criticism course (ENGL 602 at University of Maryland). Belongs on the bookcase of every liberal arts, humanities, philosophy, literature or cultural studies enthusiast. These (glaring) omissions make possible the inclusion of what is probably an excessive number of hip Europeans and North Americans who are products of the cultural studies movement but, though I love them, aren't nearly as important long-term as, say, Émile Zola, Oswald de Andrade or Octavio Paz. Also, each author is given an introduction that can help to understand their background as well as the theory they are known for. I especially enjoyed the psychoanalytic theorists (especially Jacques Lacan), felt as though my discarded feelings regarding women's rights and responsibilities were revived with feminist critique (espcially my beloved Simone de Beauvoir -- I actually cried reading the Second Sex).
