About this deal
On pushing John about their expected marriage, she is alarmed at his response that it is unlikely to be anytime soon. Being married to an Irishman, and frequently visiting Ireland, I was transported to Dublin, with the wonderful people and fabulous accent.
Armed with her best wrap dress and heels, Aisling boards a business-class flight to New York to start a new adventure. And Sarah was brilliant in that and was able to take over and say we can just say we want to take a year off and we were in a position to be able to do that and that is amazing like. It is also poignant, and having lost my father suddenly five years ago, and lived through some of the thoughts and scenes described, I found that part of the story too real – it was like being back in the hospital again, being told that there was no hope, that it could be weeks or even days (it was barely 36 hours), and fighting so hard to keep it all together instead of breaking down both then and at the funeral.
I was fascinated to read that Emmer McLysaght and Sarah Breen conceived the character of Aisling in their sitting room in 2008, when they began to observe the many traits, characteristics and quirks of a particular type of Irish girl, one they identified around them and one they identified with.A friend from home happened to be on holiday in Las Vegas and he sent me a text and said ‘you’ll never believe it, Leo Varadkar is by the pool and guess what he is reading’ and this was a good few years back and he was reading the first book. Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling is set to ‘ramp up’ for its fifth and final book, as the authors said they want to end on a high.
Emer McLysaght is the former editor of The Daily Edge and has worked extensively in journalism and radio. Emer said: “One thing that often happens is we get pictures of people reading it by the pool in places like Tenerife and Leo Varadkar in Vegas. I felt like the authors were just trying to see exactly how many cultural jokes and references could they cram onto one page and into one personality. But with glamorous new flatmates, a scandal at work and a weird love square, Aisling has no idea what's about to hit her . The narrative begins and ends with a wedding, but we can see a different Aisling from the first wedding. Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling is an enchanting and vibrant laugh out loud book and I hope that there are many more Aisling novels to follow. You might think everything is rosy for Aisling: she is in a long term relationship with her boyfriend, John, but even Aisling is starting to wonder when one of the weddings she goes to will be her own.
I was surprised that a chunk of the storyline is about a brain tumour – that’s not mentioned in any of the blurb I’d read – and, unfortunately, I know quite a lot of people who are involved in their own brain tumour issues at the moment – and this could easily blindside them.
Once we were in Ireland, we would then be paraded around to visit the "rellies" in our Sunday Best, where our cheeks would be squeezed, we would be told how much we'd grown, how much we look like our mother/father/sister/cousin/aunt* and then as we left, a secret handshake would reveal either a 50p coin, or if you were really lucky, a folded up Irish pound note. This book is full on Irish dialogue right from the get go, I honestly had to read the opening sentence three times before I understood what it meant. If you're inbetween books, and fancy something light, or if you just want a giggle then this is certainly the book for you.
