About this deal

I've considered the Zoom R24 as it seems the only Zoom one with a built in drum machine but from watching tutorials I'm not sure the drums are as easy to use as on the Boss products. I was close before with DAWs, but had always used dedicated USB audio interfaces without vocal/guitar amp modelling, I’d messed about with DAW effects plugins but quickly found out that latency reared it’s ugly head the more effects you applied to the monitor send.

I had the opportunity to watch Geir record us with his and it seems very comprehensive and easy to use. I'm still interested in a portable all-in-one unit that lets me spend less time in front of a computer screen.Another major problem for me is that the mixer level settings cannot be saved in the song data file. With the BR-800, players are able to record guitar, bass and vocals and add effects derived from Boss's flagship processors. Up to four tracks can be recorded simultaneously with eight tracks of simultaneous playback plus an additional stereo track dedicated to the built-in rhythm generator. Key issues for me are the touch controls which don't always work first time, and yes I've tried resetting or adjusting the sensitivity. Now if the lack of drums and effects are not deal breakers the you should entertain the Tascam units.

Whether you're creating intricate, multi-layered songs or point-and-capture field recordings, the BR-800 makes the recording process fast and easy. Many of the effects are derived from BOSS's flagship processors, including vocal effects from the VE-20, COSM guitar/bass effects from the GT-10 series, and modelled acoustic-guitar body effects from the AP-1 preamp, which imparts pro-quality miced-up sound and rich body tone to line-recorded acoustic guitar. Forget Zoom and its competitors, the Boss is, most unquestionably, 'the boss' when it comes to faithful sound reproduction. Connected to a PC, the BR-800 will function as an USB audio interface for recordings that utilize the internal effects. That aside it's business as usual - it's a portable, easy-to-operate machine that offers onboard rhythm programming and a host of onboard effects that can be recorded as part of the input signal, including some guitar and bass amp sims and effects derived, this time, from the GT-10/10B and vocal effects from the new VE-20.

The XLR inputs are FAR too hot as well, I find I have to use a preamp on some condenser mics to reduce their output since even with gains on minimum the BR800 gets overloaded. While you’ll never get the response or dynamics of a valve amp at full tilt in this setup, for practicing at lower volumes the tones you can get out of the BR-800 are much better than just a compromise, in fact, you’ll have access to a wider range of tones than you would through one amp anyway. Beginners will love the new EZ Recording mode which interactively guides you through the recording process. TASCAM DP-32-SD – Tascam’s latest Portastudio Flagship has all the features you could ever want, but can it match the Zoom or BOSS amp sims ? Boss don't support the BR600 any more so it doesn't work with my PC on Windows 10 so anything I record I have to export to an old laptop with Vista then transfer on a memory stick to my PC to tidy it up on audacity and convert to MP3.
