About this deal

His son Oscar inherits at age 21 and builders knock down the walls in the cellar of Gerald's old burned out mansion.

The locations, the dialect and the superbly crafted Northern grit that runs through it is so well done. Rather than this making him an unlikable or unappealing character, however, Russ Thomas finessed all these things into a man I now want to know much more about.I like the Firewatcher online posts as they not only contain cryptic information but also historical fires which I find very interesting. Firewatching is one of those novels that grabs you from the very start with a range of characters that in turn make you grin, grimace and laugh out loud as well as draw a tear to your eye on occasion.

He spent five years trying to master playing the electronic organ and another five trying to learn Spanish. That leads us to DI Jim Doggett the lead and Constable Amina Rabbani, whom Tyler is responsible for, after a year of her trying to get into CID she’s finally on her first case. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The evolving and complicated relationships amongst the team were a delight to read and I cannot wait to see how the personalities develop and coalesce in future books. After a one night stand with a young, good looking man, Adam pushes his way onto a case where a man's body has been discovered bricked in by a false wall in the cellar at the Old Vicarage in the village of Castledene.

Firewatching besides being Russ Thomas’ debut thriller it is also the introduction to a new crime fighting detective, DS Adam Tyler. The plot was intriguing and compelling, with plenty of suspense and unpredictability and interesting and enjoyable characters. The story unfolds well with twists and turns, some shocking revelations, there’s tension and suspense and it has an almost Gothic/dystopian ‘Mad Max’ feel which adds an extra dimension.

Theres fires being set all over Sheffield and when the body has been discovered, Adam is asked to help investigate. Far from a simple murder mystery, Thomas leads readers into a story defined by secrets and intrigues, horrors and vengeance, lies of omission and commission, weaving past and present together and complicating the investigative procedural in various ways, including a cold case and what becomes the race to catch not only a killer but an arsonist as well. When you think you have worked out who the killer is, there is that twist that shows you how wrong you are. I loved the title of this novel- it is very nuanced and multi-layered, although discussing it here would give too many spoilers. The characters felt authentic to me - flawed and vulnerable, I was drawn to the main character Adam Tyler - a disgraced officer relegated to cold cases.
