About this deal

The poignancy and chance for good story telling was just missed, and in the end we are both uncomfortable and bored. For the besieged Suzette, there’s also a troubling ambivalence about whether she wants to save or kill her disturbed child.

Despite all of the well-meaning efforts of these adults, however, Hanna hasn’t developed as expected. There was a plot point about Alex looking like a “Scandinavian Devil” with a beard, which really played well with a highly disturbing scene in which Hanna pretended the ‘Devil’ was having sex with her. She'd expected her heavy-duty medication — an injectable biological drug — to eliminate the worst of her Crohn's symptoms.

They threw the drawing into the fire, but when Suzette spilled wine on herself, Hanna began chanting a curse and tossed coals at her with a stick. It's always what hits our psyche the hardest that seems to stir up that powerful mixture of emotions. It was by realizing that this was the author's intent that I thought the book worked on some level and was therefore able to read through. Defiant and anti-social, she refuses to behave in kindergarten classes, forcing Suzette to homeschool her.

But when she found a boy in a red helmet also there one day, she turned on him, taking of the helmet and barking at him so that he hit his head on the wall until it bled.Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. I'll just say that if you have any trust issues with people close to you, you probably shouldn't read it. Like zombies — but without the insatiable hunger for brains — children could destroy entire villages if only they had the organizational skills and ability to remain focused on one task for more than five minutes. The plot will get compared to The Omen, the Richard Donner film from the 1970’s, but where that plot involved a supernatural presence this book does not which makes it a little scarier.

Following the clue up into the eaves, the couple make a gruesome discovery: their home was once a real-life murder house, with the evidence still concealed within the four walls. The very thought of it made her start shaking her head until Hanna twitched, glancing at her with a soured frown as if she was already stinking up the room. It’s no different than the Romans and gladiators and feeding them to the lions and everyone watching in the Colosseum.

If it wasn't for her inconsolable fear of losing so much small intestine that she'd lose the inalienable right to shit on a toilet like a normal person.
