About this deal

No matter how many stories are told or books written, it seems there is a neverending supply of man's inhumanity to others still to be told.

One of the children, Twelve-year-old Rill Foss, grows up taking care of her younger siblings, often fulfilling parental roles.Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals, in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country, Before We Were Yours is a riveting, wrenching and ultimately uplifting global bestseller.

This fictional novel was based on true events surrounding Georgia Tann and the Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage which was an organization involved with the kidnapping of children and their illegal adoptions. Most of us agree this was our favorite kind of historical fiction however for a couple of us things didn’t quite work out as well for them.

I was completely lost in the plight of the Foss children, while I was heartbroken by the absolute injustice of it all. She is able to take this real life scandal and insert her characters within it to tell the story of two families torn apart and put back together again. there was even a little romance, and even if this book all tied up a little too neatly at the end, I am a sucker for a happy ending! Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country—Lisa Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong. It is difficult to say whether I actually enjoyed the book or not as I found it so harrowing and disturbing, but I can honestly say that it was one of the most amazing books that I have ever read. Encouraged by their contact with Wingate and award-winning journalist Judy Christie, who documented the stories of fifteen adoptees in this book, many determined Tann survivors set out to trace their roots and find their birth families.

The link between the two gradually becomes clear but it hard to recount without giving away the plot! This is based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country—Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong. Although this is the first novel that I have read by Lisa Wingate, apparently she has written others.

Their parents have to go to the hospital due to complications with their mother's pregnancy and childbirth. I’ll start by explaining that ever since I laid eyes on this cover a few months ago, I haven’t stopped thinking of this book. But what I don't like is when an author just piles on more and more dread and horrible things to happen. It is almost a cliché to say a book is 'lovingly written' but that phrase applies clearly to Lisa Wingate's latest novel, Before We Were Yours. This is what's possible when love is real and strong, when people are devoted to one another, when they'll sacrifice anything to be together.
