About this deal

If they don't have an interest in military history or WWII then I don't know if they'd like this book. Hitler was concerned about his armor and viewed Paris as his main target so he went along with Goring. The Miracle of Dunkirk” is a compelling read that provides a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. Five to seven days to pull off the amazing, almost impossible logistical feat of getting close to 400,000 combatants off a section of beach, across the English Channel to England and safety from the Luftwaffe, panzers and troops of the Germans hell bent on annihilation of the French and British Expeditionary Force. Written by a range of highly regarded children’s authors, these tales bring different historical periods to life for a young audience. This would be ideal as a class read for those studying WW2 at school - especially as it presents a very different perspective of the war.Unable to retreat any farther, the Allied soldiers set up defense positions and prayed for deliverance. Lord does a very interesting and excellent job of describing this retreat (in the third person) through the use of personal accounts of the events. After listening to it I do understand why it was a miracle and am truly amazed and inspired by how many civilians came to the rescue. While the troops had to leave behind much of their heavy equipment and vehicles, the saved soldiers formed a vital nucleus for the defense of Britain and the eventual liberation of Europe.

With vivid storytelling and attention to detail, Sebag-Montefiore delves into the military strategies, individual acts of heroism, and the intense challenges faced during this critical operation. Lord's book is an eye opener for those who think Dunkirk was just a bunch of citizens rallying to pull a few men from harms way. During his time in Europe, where he eventually takes part in the evacuation from Dunkirk, he encounters both racism and comradeship from fellow soldiers and others that he meets. The way it was written was quite informative and in layman's terms, but the author jumped back and forth between dates so it was hard to follow. He describes the individual acts of bravery and sacrifice and analyses the decisions of the commanders who made the choice to evacuate. Some of the incidents, as told by the survivors, are heart breaking and seem to support the brutality of the Nazis who killed prisoners rather than take them alive. Churchill and company were concerned that the losses were too much in light of what they thought would be a long war. These books for teenagers take a variety of different approaches to representing the events of World War II. Elsewhere, hospitals full of the sick and wounded who had been left behind to receive treatment from the enemy’s doctors.

Operation Dynamo involved the coordinated effort of the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force (RAF), and a flotilla of civilian boats. One of the strengths of Lord's telling of this disaster turned into a victory, is his attention to the action taking place on the perimeter, away from the beaches where the diminished and trapped BEF/French troops fought gallantly to hold off the Germans until the rescue could take place. Drawing on official records and personal interviews, Thompson examines the military aspects of the operation, offering insights into the decisions made and the factors that shaped the evacuation’s outcome. This emotive poetry anthology from former Children’s Laureate, Michael Rosen, explores the plight of refugees today, Rosen's childhood as part of a Jewish family in post-war London, his family's' memories of the war, and the fate of relatives who disappeared in Nazi Germany. I wish I had known then what I know now, about Bill and his family, his work and his colleagues, but above all of their accomplishments.

In 1940, the Allies had been beaten back by the Nazis across France to the northern port of Dunkirk. It's not like I don't know how either of those stories ended but Lord has a real gift for seeking out people you'd like to have a beer with in ordinary circumstances who are then thrown into extraordinary circumstances and brings you along for the ride. Dunkirk is a shooting gallery for the Luftwaffe and the men waiting on the beaches watch as ships are strafed and bombed and sunk right in front of them.

Thompson, drawing on his military expertise, offers a detailed analysis of the military strategies, challenges, and outcomes of the operation. The book has a number of photos, charts and diagrams in, the photos are excellent both in black and white and colour, they mainly are of the vehicles of the less exciting vehicles but they are great none the less and are a key to the book. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. The book offers a gripping and detailed retelling of the events, highlighting the remarkable spirit and determination that turned what seemed like a desperate situation into a symbol of hope. When the Titanic made her final plunge in A Night to Remember, Lord details the sound by counting the number of plates, cups, articles of glass, that were breaking all at once. Further, the French felt they were not being treated equally once the evacuation began to gather steam.
