The Cumulus 23 is softer than the Ghost 13, Ride 14 and Pegasus 38 but not as soft as the Clifton 7 so it doesn’t feel like you’re sinking down with every foot strike. Personally, if I was looking at this line of shoes for my next purchase, the Nimbus Lite 2 would have my attention hands down. Lined with Gore-Tex, you will notice that the Gel Cumulus 23 G-TX is water-resistant, yet breathable. When I ran in the rain, both shoes picked up a ton of weight and I felt like I was carrying an extra 1 kilogram of water weight on my feet.Ahead of many Asics shoes with the change to a full ground contact outsole 3-4 years ago, the newest version makes some changes to soften the ride, widen the fit and make it a bit more accommodating. In a world where daily trainers have carbon plates and super foam midsoles, the dependable ASICS Cumulus 23 still doesn’t feel like a boring shoe. Another key update is that the Gel component in the heel has been tuned to a softer formula to give an overall softer feel to the heel.

The density of the rubber on the Cumulus 23 is higher than that of the Nimbus 23 which leads to firmer landings but increased durability.You’ll find great support in the heel and ankle area, so consider it a stable shoe without all the bells and whistles of a stability shoe. I agree with Derek about the Ghost 13 which for me combines an (overly) soft midsole with an overly firm outsole and too much flex. It is a bit lighter than the more plush Gel Nimbus 23, but tips the scales over the lighter and more modern Gel Nimbus Lite 2. While the midsole here is not as springy as the Nimbus Lite the overall platform is narrower which for me translates to a noticed more nimble quicker transition if one that is not quite as stable. For lateral heel flare, this creates a greater arc of motion for the foot to go through, which is compensated for by the foot moving through this motion faster than normal.
