Part of the new Ladybird Expert series, Battle of Britain is an accessible, insightful and authoritative account of the most famous aerial battle in history. Children all over the world have used Ladybird books to learn to read, discover stories and find out about many subjects. The books in this series are not parodies, but instead use the classic format to serve as clear introductions to a wide variety of subjects, generally in the fields of science and history. Of course, there are some aspect of British history which need parental inputs, but overall an excellent way to encourage children to learn history. When I first got interested in Ladybird books, I found it very hard to get the sort of list I wanted – one which struck a balance between simplicity and information.

You'll discover the common origins of dogs and Brussels sprouts, how it is we're all mutants, where wings, ears and tails came from, why sex is good for you, how some dinosaurs evolved and survived, and why human evolution may finally have stopped. An independent company for much of its life, Ladybird Books became part of the Pearson Group in 1972. Series like ‘People at Work’, introduced in 1962 and ‘How it Works’, introduced in 1965, provide beautifully illustrated snapshots of their time.

The collection covers the wide range of subjects Ladybird published, ranging from What to Look for in Spring to the recent Ladybird Experts series. This relates to the number of Ladybird books in publication at a particular time and this figure was often mentioned on the last few pages, rear dust jacket flap and then on the rear board of the book as well. The main reason for extending much beyond the mid-80s cut-off point is so as to include all the books in a series which began in the ‘golden years’.
