But the unique two intercepted storylines ( both of them are interesting) and smart ending earned my additional half star. Her main character, Winifred ‘Freddie’ Kinkaid is also an author, working on a new book in the inspiring setting of the Boston Public Library. The mystery is clever enough to keep us guessing, though I did wonder how the person who stole a phone had a good enough photo of the owner to open and use it (facial recognition). I guessed wrong, which is not unusual for me as I am notoriously bad at guessing ‘whodunit’ in any crime situation. When Freddie confronts him, he tells her he was defending himself from his stepfather, a cruel man whose abuse culminating in an attempt to sexually assault Cain on the night Cain killed him.

He is aware of protests in the United States over the killing of unarmed Black people in police custody and even the idea of unconscious bias, but he feels tricked by Hannah’s failure to include defined racial markers. It’s one of those novels you have to read it to believe it and I’m pretty confident you’ll also feel the same way that it’s an eccentric yet exciting read from beginning to end. This thrilling excursion into metafiction from Australian author Gentill ( Crossing the Lines) wittily examines the writing process itself…This elegantly constructed novel is intelligent, funny, and profound. This novel is a jam-packed murder mystery that has so much going on, it could literally be three stories told in one.The police are going to make my life hell for a while, and I don’t want you to be caught in the damage. The killer clown is entertaining and all that, but what we're really interested in is whether the fat kid gets the pretty girl. There are enough red herrings and clues to keep the reader guessing throughout the book and although the mystery was the main part of the story I enjoyed the back stories of the four friends being teased out and explored. i was waiting for this to be made a part of the story - turns out he's a freak who was never in america at all, or something! And then you have the sections at the end of each chapter, the letters to Hannah, the author writing this whole story, which add an element of mystery and suspense as well.

The Woman in the Library is stunningly clever in its structure and execution, and it’s this that I’ll talk about more than the actual murder mystery itself. I haven’t felt this uncomfortable about an ending since I watched the version of Black Christmas from the 70s. Whilst this is taking place the story is broken up by letters to a published author, Hannah, in Australia from an avid fan.i requested an ARC of this on netgalley with great haste and love in my heart, because it's set partially in the boston public library, otherwise known as the single greatest place in the world. If his long-distance efforts to encroach on her creative territory make you uneasy, they did me too! Freddie has decided to spend the day writing at the Boston Public Library (BPL) but she finds herself distracted by the artistic detail of the ceiling and by the three other people who are sharing her table-People she has made notes on, so she could base characters on them later on-giving them the monikers Handsome Man, Heroic Chin, and Freud Girl. First and foremost, we are introduced to Hannah Tigone, an Australian best-selling author, who is writing a new mystery novel.

However, in this case, the motive was a little weak, so it was hard to get excited about the surprise. I really like Gentill’s mystery series featuring Rowland Sinclair and his bohemian friends in ’30s Australia. there's no excuse for each of the friends having 1-2 personality traits when there are fewer sentences they don't show up in than do.Her widely praised standalone novel, Crossing the Lines, won the Ned Kelly Award for Best Crime Novel, was short-listed for the Davitt Award, and chosen as Apple's Best Book of the Month for April 2020. Freddy is writing a book and she decides to incorporate these three people into her book, a sort of writing what she sees. Freddie, I really can't answer questions while you're doing that," he says, pulling me round and against his chest.

Equally confusing, Freddie uses the other three strangers she meets as inspriation for her novel and gives them nicknames: Handsome Man, Heroic Chin and Freud Girl – I had to keep checking who was who to begin with, until they became friends and she began using their actual names more. This murder mystery, whilst following a lot of the tropes of a typical murder mystery, is not run-of-the-mill. Every time we get to Leo's letters, which is at the end of every single chapter, I dreaded reading it.

At the very end, after Letters-Leo has been arrested, in last section of Freddie’s story, Book-Leo arrives at the hospital to take Freddie and Marigold home, in a weird cliffhanger that fizzled out. We do know that our chocolate is inferior, but there’s a kind of national agreement to pretend otherwise. I still wasn’t sure if we were supposed to think it was a creepy, ominous ending OR if we were supposed to think Book-Leo was a good friend, like what she wanted from Letters-Leo. In the story-within-a-story, Cain survives surgery, and his and Freddie’s love for each other is cemented. He encourages her to include murder, physical and sexual abuse of female characters, and gory details.
