Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t be allowed to use his words in this way, but one of the best moments in the writing process came from approaching John Foxx with the idea of using his lyric and getting a lovely message back from him, allowing me to use it and wishing me luck with the book.So much of the text feels like it was written by an AI programme that had been fed the contents of the music press from the period in question with little of no colour added by the author. I am the oldest of my siblings so I didn’t have anyone playing stuff in their room that I could hear. It is also done with humour and an affable tone that adds a human touch to the academic … Plus, it’s so bloody lovely to immerse oneself into this utterly fascinating and key period in the evolution of electronic music once again and realise how important it is.

If you were to ask me again in half an hour I would probably choose three completely different records! Through working with Erasure I’ve also got to know people like Daniel Miller from Mute Records and the producer Gareth Jones, and they both made themselves available to answer any questions too. You talked about wanting to go back to original sources and that’s where most of your material comes from but you did have access to some of the artists you were writing about didn’t you?Tubeway Army were born out of this punk revolution, and it was only a couple of years later when Gary Numan saw a Mini-Moog in the corner of a recording studio that his interest was piqued. This is also the book's weakness in that it does not allow a qualitative judgement and perspective on the music to emerge from studying its longer-term reception. As for a concerts wish list, I never saw the Eurythmics so I think they would be top of the list for me.
