It had a definite Agatha Christie feel to it where everyone was a suspect, my only criticism would be that the ending felt slightly rushed but would definitely recommend to any historical thriller fans. A gripping tale set in London, 1936, when Lena -- a biracial nightclub singer who passes as white -- sees her poisoned boss die in front of her.While she supposedly has common sense, she didn’t ask many questions of Charlie Bacon, the stranger with the offer.

Even so, I hoped that anyone seeing me in such a state would assume an attack of seasickness, that they'd glance out on the relative calm of the sea and take pity on me, wondering how I'd survive once we hit choppier waters. There’s a sense in which she doesn’t feel like herself, sailing on someone else’s charity, in grand society and not even in her own clothes.Considering that this book is written in first person narrative, as well as by means of a diary, we just are given privy to Lena‘s thoughts and concerns while she is on this trip.
