It is regarded as one of the most famous holiday advertisements of all time and is believed to have influenced the success of Skegness, the 'Fisherman' is now the mascot for Skegness and celebrated his 100th birthday in 2008. Produced for the Great Northern Railway (GNR), this poster quickly became one of England's most beloved holiday images. This blueprint for Jolly can also be found in an earlier book of 1902, The Round the World ABC, where a suspiciously familiar-looking sailor appears under ‘P for Penzance’.Poster prints are budget friendly enlarged prints in standard poster paper sizes (A0, A1, A2, A3 etc). Personalised advertising may be considered a “sale” or “sharing” of information under California and other state privacy laws, and you may have a right to opt out. These were all hallmarks of the classic Hassall poster, but he also had an instinctive ability to tickle the Edwardian public’s sense of humour and appeal to the man or woman on the street. One of the most famous railway posters ever printed, “Skegness Is So Bracing” was commissioned by Great Northern Railway. When he died in 1948, Skegness Council sent a wreath with the Jolly Fisherman picked out in flowers.

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer. We take intellectual property concerns very seriously, but many of these problems can be resolved directly by the parties involved. John Hassall only visited Skegness once, in 1936 when he was given ‘the freedom of the foreshore’ by the town. Committed to paint- ing en plein air and recording the rural lives of ordinary people, Knight’s paintings of Larmona Cove and Sennen Cove capture the wild drama and natural beauty of the Cornish coast (as in On the Cliffs, above).

The print been scaled for the best fit within the sheet and set within a white margin to assist with framing and mounting. After an eventful youth, spent variously as a student in Europe and a farmer in Canada, he became a regular contributor to The Graphic magazine.

Turning off the personalized advertising setting won’t stop you from seeing Etsy ads, but it may make the ads you see less relevant or more repetitive. The original now hangs in a place of honour in Skegness Town Hall, but if you look you will see ‘Jolly’ everywhere around Skegness.

The cats are the Yorkcats, Yorkcat and Eric, which regularly featured in the York Evening Press (later York Press) newspaper.
