About this deal

This book is in good+ condition - ex-library with library borrowing sheet and markings on rfep; two markings (about an inch long) from sticky tape on ffep; small library stamp opposite contents page; slight lean to spine; text clean and bright. The most notorious example is changing the title of the first novel from “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” to “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”. The Carbonel books are excellent, imbued with wonder, dry humour, and practicality in equal measure, as well as a clear-eyed and sometimes sardonic love of cats.

If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind. The chapters are self-contained and deeply satisfying in their own right and although a more modern audience might be unfamiliar with some of the vocabulary of the time, it’s written so tightly that the reader just rolls along with it. If I look at the back of The Kingdom of Carbonel it says "For copyright reasons this edition is not for sale in the U.

I first read this many years ago and recently re-purchased at the ripe old age of 51, for the sheer pleasure of re-reading one of my all time favourite books. Everything kinda just falls into place: the children always have just enough pocket change, they never bicker, Carbonel is meant to be leader by right of Birth (which, you know, grates on my American sensibilities just too much), the rich lady is kind, the mother is patient, etc.

The introduction of new characters, the new villain witch and her toad among others, kept the antics of Rosemary and John fresh and interesting -- possibly more enjoyable than the second book in the trilogy. Today I chose Carbonel about the Prince of Cats and his adventures with Rosemary and John to free him from a binding Silent Magic spell so he can reclaim his throne. It's when I learned the word "widdershins" which I've almost never seen since (and spell check doesn't recognise) and is a great way to learn about other times and cultures. I remember that Five Children and It and most of the late Victorian and early Edwardian children’s fantasies by E. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall).
