About this deal

S. Johnson's most humorous book but it is a dark, sly humour predicated on the distaste Johnson had for an oppressive post-war British society (an oppression he delineates brilliantly in The Unfortunates ). It seems to me far more than educational access that resulted in a monk formalising the system of double-entry. Frustrated by the petty injustices that beset his life – particularly those caused by the behaviour of authority figures – he determines a unique way to settle his grievances: a system of moral double-entry bookkeeping. Christie’s actions try to keep pace, becoming more extreme, more sociopathic, until, well, they become murderous. Let us, though, for the time being at least, like the good humans we are, focus on that other god: capitalism.

While some of Johnson's tactics may seem dated, his questions remain provocative, his chilly humor pointed and sharp. I)n der Tradition des experimentellen Erzählens und genauer noch in der Tradition jenes abgründigen angelsächsischen Humors, den Autoren wie Sterne, Joyce oder Flann O'Brien begründet haben. At least your Great Idea prevented you from becoming bored to death with life,’ I told Christie when I paid what he must have seen as my last visit to him. So I was forever peering down a waterfall of text disappearing into the dubious central spinal crevice or up the spout of right hand type emerging from the same depths. But as time continues, the sources of Christie’s debits widen, growing progressively larger and larger.

We fondly believe that there is going to be a reckoning, a day upon which all injustices are evened out. You might find it too much to take if your view of the world is blurred by Hollywood romantic comedies, but if you give it a chance it might change your life -or at least two hours of it. It is the product of a genius, a metaphorical bomb-maker with a deceptively simple, but explosive message that baffles and mucks about with the establishment, while amusing us zany hipsters. He encounters the principles of Double-Entry Bookkeeping and adapts them in his own dramatic fashion to settle his account with society. The soundtrack, released on 11 June 2001 on Hut Records, was written and performed by Luke Haines, who also co-produced it with Pete Hofman.

However, in the DVD commentary, Tickell and Moran discuss how most of the film was shot in Luxembourg, including the scene at a hydro-electric plant where Christie poisons London's water supply, and how precautions often had to be made to disguise the true locations, such as getting traffic outside a pub to drive on the left side of the road as the characters walked in to make it look like it was in the UK. Skater responded with a distinctly In a further rejection of realist fiction, the story itself is deliberately over the top, increasingly and hilariously surreal as Christie avenges the smallest slights with the most elaborate and excoriating plots that culminate, finally, in mass murder. Christie had expected to have to work hard, and to find the work both uncongenial and menial, at first. Short, playful, fascinating: I look forward to getting through the rest of his short back-catalogue, from novels to poetry.
