About this deal

She is forced to leave her mother who will be burned at the stake for witchcraft and flees to the Scottish highlands. Scottish folklore is full of stories about supernatural beings and Glencoe has its fair share: ghosts and bogles, a water bull ( tarbh uisge ) and water horse ( each uisge ), fairies and selkies – Ballachulish even has a dragon! Charles Leslie, a supporter of the former King James, makes his way from Ireland in the dead of winter to a prison in Inverary Scotland where a witness to the massacre is housed. Corrag has found companionship in her final days and Leslie learns to see whe world through fresh eyes. Her talking is like a river – running on and bursting into smaller rivers which lead nowhere, so she comes back to her starting place.

We all have our stories, and we speak of them, and weave them into other people’s stories--that's how it goes, does it not? Corrag herself is a wonderful free spirited character who dwells in her world without Kings and religion to answer to and she lives her life doing good and carrying on the traditions of her mother and those that have gone before her. Most of the clan was able to escape, to the fury of William of Orange's agent who was behind the scheme. The book alternates between Corrag's narration of her story from childhood to the present and Charles' letters. The breathtaking physical world of the Scottish highlands comes into sharp focus, as we travel with Corrag, a persecuted woman who flees the lowlands where she is labeled as a witch, as were her mother and grandmother before her. Three times they attempted to carry Corrag to Eilean Munde, and three times they were driven back by the storm; as a witch, Corrag was not allowed to be buried on sacred ground. stars because of the pacing problems and the "romance," which was a distraction and a subtraction for me in a book that needed no romance, let alone that one. She shows us that the world is magical, not because she is a witch but because there is magic in "the simple daily moments that we stop seeing". But I think it is people like us-lonesome, in love with the blustery world-who hear the heart most clearly.

The kind that has an uncritical view of romantic love, deploys a formulaic structure of expectation and reimbursement, like readily assembled furniture, and at no point is self-aware of the smoke screens it’s pedalling.
