About this deal

The scenes with Brigitte slaying with the scythe could've been more effective if they were more graphic. Several of Rollin's recurring visual triggers find their way into the film as well, such as blooming candles in dimly lit rooms, stark splashes of red against washed-out secondary colors, and usage of see-through veils for his focal women.

Jean Rollins films are not for everybody - they're trippy, dreamlike and almost surreal at times and frequently involve graphic violence coupled with kinky sex, all qualities that are bound to turn off less adventurous viewers. Also present are two highly desirable softcore outtakes (with Lahaie) totalling around fifteen minutes and apparently shot if the film was required for export to more liberal territories, plus a twenty five minute documentary about Rollin that I originally saw broadcast on British TV surprisingly. Thus, the film plays more like a pastoral version of the blood-bathing Elizabeth Bathory saga with the eroticism aspects pushed up to full throttle (a la Borowczyk's Immoral Tales). If Fascination isn't his best film, it's damn close and fans of this film can rest assured it's been given the presentation it's long deserved and can consider this disc highly recommended. If you're a Rollin fan, get this captivating film on Blu-ray immediately; if you're not, consider opening your mind and putting your toe in the inviting waters - you may find yourself jumping in completely! She visits Gwenda in her dressing room, whereupon the two ladies talk over their mutual attraction for Larry.

Those off-put by a fair amount of mild sexually-explicit material in their horror films might want to shy away from Fascination, but those who enjoy indulging in the eroticism of vampiric culture should find plenty of satisfying material to sink their teeth into. Set in 1905, the story concerns a group of aristocratic women who acquire more epicurean tastes after drinking ox's blood as a cure for anemia.

The UK release contains a good range of extras - note, however, that it is cropped slightly and the credits, while contemporary, are tacked-on oddly after the end of the film. By far one of the best looking of Rollin's many beautiful and macabre films, the classic image of Lahaie clothed in a black cape and wielding a scythe definitely leaves an impression as do many of the scenes that occur later on in the film once the supernatural elements are in full swing. Brand spanking new from reputable UK company with 30 years experience in retail, please note not all our new items are shrink wrapped. Lazy journalism has reinforced and perpetuated the cinematic myth that she was purely a Hitchcock creation (springing fully formed into the limelight courtesy of smash-hit drama The 39 Steps), but nothing is further from the truth.

This is director Jean Rollin at his best; visual delights, sensual lesbian love-making, the beautiful Brigitte Lahaie as a scythe-wielding avenger, and a group of castle-dwelling bourgeois women addicted to drinking blood. Jean Rollin's Fascination relishes in atmosphere and voracity, offering more siren-like seduction amid its vampire elements than mounting tension. Despite going on general release across the country, only one copy of Fascination is known to exist – a 35mm print held at the bfi in its original nitrate format. However, the easy to follow story with the way the entire thing looks makes it an excellent midnight flick for those who want a big 70s style feel in a sex horror film or if you want an exploitation film that concentrates mainly on visuals. The answer: Fascination, a compelling, highly unorthodox of the blood drinker mythos for which Rollin gained financing through a few adult film quickies. From a technical point of view the film is rough around the edges, but there's a noticeable Warhol/Factory-style energy inherent in both the direction and performances which carries things through.

It sounds like the audio was taken from a metallic-sounding source at most points, something that affects just about every sound that comes out of the speakers due to the lower-budget audio source.

Virgins and Vampires," a 24-minute profile of Rollin, with extensive interviews, form the TV series Eurotika! The most suitable approach to Rollin's work is to forget about cinematic convention, remove expectation of complete verisimilitude, and sit back to witness the strange events of a place that surely can't exist.
