About this deal

I thoroughly enjoyed going on this adventure with Wick and was captivated by the descriptions of the forest and the Hobs. Like By Ash, Oak and Thorn, Harklights is a meaningful story of love, family, nature and possibilities. Wick is an orphan forced to work in a match factory under the cruel eye of Old Ma Bogey, a villainous overseer with a metal thumb and blood red lipstick. Magical and with an ongoing theme of awareness and care of the world around you of wildlife, like The Borrowers meets The Animals of farthing wood, mixed with a book I recently read By Ash, Oak and Thorn.

Illustrated throughout with simple black and white pictures, this is a lovely tale for children to ignite their wonder in the natural world. With ideas such as making a wild corner in the garden, building woodpiles for insects and planting bee and butterfly-friendly flowers, readers can become stewards of nature, playing an active role in conservation and protection for the future. Therefore, when Wick is offered a chance by a tiny group of grateful Hobs, after he saves their baby, he is quick to take it.He dreams only of escaping, until one day a bird drops something impossible and magical at his feet - a tiny baby in an acorn cradle. Kelly's particular interest in language acquisition and vocabulary development has led to the publication of her first book, Word Power: Amplifiying vocabulary instruction (2019) - full of ideas for building a language-rich environment and top tips to Power-Up explicit vocabulary instruction. Winner of the Joan Aiken Future Classics Prize, Harklights is a magical story celebrating family, friendship and the natural world, filled with a message of hope for our times.

Through this encounter, Wick overcame some fears and fought against Old Ma Bogey, who destroyed the nature to force the orphans to make matches. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. I highly recommend getting this book for young children; not only will they enjoy it but they will remember the message and carry it with them.I’m not sure how many books I have read in my life but my favourites are all the Harry Potters and The cursed child – I loved it ! This book would lend itself brilliantly to PSHE lessons and any topic where environmental issues are discussed. Leaving the lights of Harklight behind him, Wick discovers the miniature world of the Hobs: a civilisation of tiny people living in the forest, who protect it as well the animals and nature within it. Harklights by Tim Tilley is a heartwarming Middle Grade read with an environmental message that goes straight to the readers' hearts.
